Diwali
Styling Guide

A Diwali kurta has to stand out in a room where every man has made an effort, which puts fit ahead of embellishment. The five days run from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj, with Lakshmi Puja at the centre. In Karnataka the day that matters most for new clothes is Naraka Chaturdashi, when the morning oil bath is followed by wearing something new. At Chirag Parmar Signatures in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, we design Diwali wear that works across the whole run of the festival: a temple visit in the morning, family lunch, and a party the same evening. Diwali also means diyas, candles and fireworks, so practical choices matter as much as appearance.

Warm jewel tones, deep maroon, burnt orange, and gold-threaded ivory, catch diya and candle light in a way cool tones do not, which is exactly why they have stayed the Diwali standard. A solid silk kurta with a mandarin collar handles the daytime rituals, and adding a structured Nehru jacket converts the same kurta into evening party wear without a full change. For men who prefer Western wear at Diwali parties, a textured blazer over a plain dark shirt is a cleaner choice than a full suit. Keep loose stoles and long drapes secured and away from diyas and sparklers, and avoid synthetic fabrics near open flames.

  • Bespoke suits, tuxedos and blazers for business and weddings
  • Sherwanis, Jodhpuri bandhgalas and Indo-Western groom wear
  • Hand-painted and hand-embroidered pieces, worked in-house
  • Patterns drafted from 20 to 25 measurements at our Bengaluru studio

Diwali Guide

What Should a Man Wear for Diwali?

A Diwali kurta has a harder job than most festive clothing, because it is worn in a room where every other man has also made an effort. The festival spans several distinct settings across a few days, and they do not ask for the same thing.

SettingWhat worksNotes
Lakshmi Puja at homeSilk or cotton-silk kurta, ivory, cream or goldSeated, daytime or early evening, heavily photographed
Family dinnerKurta with a bundi or Nehru jacketThe most common Diwali look, and the most reusable
Diwali partyDeeper jewel tones, a structured jacket or bandhgalaEvening light flattens pale cloth
Office DiwaliKurta with trousers, or a Nehru jacket over a shirtFestive without being ceremonial

Is Silk Safe Around Diyas and Fireworks?

Natural fibres are the sensible choice around open flame, and this is the practical reason to avoid synthetics at Diwali rather than a matter of taste. Synthetic cloth melts rather than chars, and it clings while doing so. Cotton, cotton-silk and silk all behave more predictably near a diya. Beyond the fabric, keep sleeves controlled rather than loose and flowing when you are lighting lamps, and keep long stoles off the floor and away from flames.

Which Colours Work Best for Diwali?

  • Ivory, cream and gold: the traditional puja palette, and the most photographed.
  • Deep jewel tones: bottle green, wine, midnight blue and rust hold their shape under warm evening light.
  • Black with gold work: increasingly common at parties, and genuinely striking if the fit is right.
  • Avoid pale pastels for evening: they wash out under warm indoor lighting and against fairy lights.

If you are coordinating with family, agree a palette rather than an identical outfit. A shared colour family photographs as a group; matching outfits photograph as a uniform. Our groom colour combination guide covers pairings and undertones.

Kurta, Bundi or Bandhgala?

The kurta on its own is right for a daytime puja and for anywhere you will be seated for long stretches. Adding a bundi or Nehru jacket is the single easiest way to raise the formality of a kurta you already own, and it gives structure in photographs without much heat. A bandhgala or an Indo-Western jacket belongs at a party or a late dinner, where the room is dressed up and the light is low. See our Nehru jacket styling guide for proportion and cloth weight.

Getting More Than One Wear Out of It

A well-cut festive kurta is not a single-occasion purchase. The same set carries into an engagement as a guest, a naming ceremony, a temple visit, a daytime function or the next festival in the calendar. That is the argument for having one made properly rather than buying two that fit approximately: cut from your own measurements, it stays wearable for years rather than for one evening.

What Does It Cost, and How Long Does It Take?

GarmentFromTypical rangeLead time
Designer Kurtas & Bundi Sets₹5,500₹5,500 – ₹25,000+1–2 weeks (4–8 weeks if hand-embroidered)
Indo-Western & Bandhgalas₹12,000₹12,000 – ₹58,000+3–4 weeks

Our published starting prices and typical ranges, plus the usual studio lead time before the fitting. Every commission is quoted individually at the consultation, because cloth, construction and the hours of hand embroidery move the figure more than anything else. Unstitched silks such as a veshti, panche or mundu are not included.

How Early Should You Order?

What you wantHow long it takesWhen to start
Plain cotton or cotton-silk kurta1 to 2 weeks, plus the fitting3 weeks ahead
Kurta with a bundi or Nehru jacket2 to 3 weeks4 to 5 weeks ahead
Hand-embroidered silk kurta4 to 8 weeks2 months ahead

Bespoke kurta sets at our Basavanagudi studio start from ₹5,500 and run to ₹25,000 and beyond, depending on cloth and how much of the garment is worked by hand. Every kurta is drafted from roughly 20 to 25 of your own measurements and cut from our own fabric library. One fitting is standard before the garment is finished, and alterations are covered for one month after delivery or until the garment has been worn, whichever comes first.

If your date is closer than the table allows, our Express service offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design.

Frequently Asked Questions

A solid silk kurta with a mandarin collar in a warm jewel tone, deep maroon, burnt orange, or gold-threaded ivory, is the most reliable Diwali choice, since these shades catch diya and candle light better than cool tones. Adding a structured Nehru jacket over the same kurta converts a daytime look into evening party wear without a full outfit change.

Yes, a textured blazer over a plain dark shirt is a well-judged choice for a Diwali party, particularly at office or hotel events. A full business suit tends to read as underdressed for the occasion rather than overdressed, since the festival calls for some warmth in the palette.

In Karnataka it is Naraka Chaturdashi, the morning of the early oil bath, rather than the evening of Lakshmi Puja. Plan your main outfit for that morning: it lands a day before most people expect, and it is the deadline that matters if something is being made for you.

Allow 2-3 weeks for a made-to-measure kurta, and longer if hand embroidery is involved. Diwali is our busiest festive period at the Basavanagudi studio, so we advise clients to book fittings around a month ahead rather than in the final fortnight.

Natural fabrics such as cotton and silk are generally considered safer than synthetics near flames, but no everyday fabric is fireproof. Keep stoles and loose sleeves secured and away from diyas and fireworks.
