Sankranti, Pongal & Lohri
Styling Guide

A Pongal kurta, a Sankranti kurta and a Lohri kurta are, in practice, the same commission cut three ways. The harvest festivals arrive together in the middle of January and go by different names depending on where your family is from: Makar Sankranti across Karnataka and much of India, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Lohri in Punjab and the north, Uttarayan in Gujarat. The clothes have more in common than the customs do. This is the coolest stretch of the year in Bengaluru, the events run from early morning to late evening outdoors, and almost everyone wears a kurta. At Chirag Parmar Signatures in Basavanagudi we tailor for exactly that: silk and cotton-silk kurtas that photograph well at a family gathering, and layers that come off by noon.

Start with the temperature rather than the tradition. January mornings in Bengaluru are genuinely cold by local standards, and most of these festivals begin at dawn, so a kurta alone is rarely enough at 7am and is usually too much by 1pm. The answer is a mid-weight cotton-silk or raw silk kurta with a bundi or Nehru jacket over it, in a heavier cloth than you would wear in October, so the layer does real work and comes off cleanly for lunch. For Sankranti in Karnataka, cream, ivory and gold with mustard or turmeric accents sit naturally alongside the ellu-bella exchange and temple visits. For Pongal, the traditional register is a silk veshti with an angavastram, worn with a silk shirt or kurta, most often in cream or off-white with a gold border. For Lohri, the evening is spent standing around a bonfire, so choose a fitted kurta with a waistcoat or jacket, add a shawl you can drape rather than a loose stole, and keep synthetics away from the fire entirely. For kite flying at Uttarayan, roll the sleeves, keep the kurta shorter and the cloth tough, and expect the outfit to take a beating on a terrace.

  • Bespoke suits, tuxedos and blazers for business and weddings
  • Sherwanis, Jodhpuri bandhgalas and Indo-Western groom wear
  • Hand-painted and hand-embroidered pieces, worked in-house
  • Patterns drafted from 20 to 25 measurements at our Bengaluru studio

Sankranti, Pongal & Lohri Guide

Three Festivals, One Week, One Wardrobe

Depending on where your family is from, the same week in the middle of January is Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Lohri or Uttarayan. The rituals differ sharply; the wardrobe question barely does. Each one asks for a mid-weight kurta, a layer for a cold start, and cloth that survives a day spent largely outdoors.

FestivalWhereWhat it asks of the outfit
Makar SankrantiKarnataka and much of IndiaCream, ivory and gold with mustard accents; layered for a dawn start
PongalTamil NaduSilk veshti and angavastram for the main day, simpler kurta for visiting
LohriPunjab and the northWarmth, and fabric that is safe near a bonfire
UttarayanGujaratClothes you can move and sweat in on a terrace all day

Why Do You Need Layers in Bengaluru?

Mid-January brings the coolest mornings of the Bengaluru year, and every one of these festivals starts early. The mistake is treating a festive kurta as a single garment. A two-piece system works better: a mid-weight kurta, plus a layer chosen for the hour rather than the look.

  • Bundi or Nehru jacket: the most useful layer. Adds structure in photographs and comes off without ceremony.
  • Shawl: traditional, warm, easy to shed, and the right answer for Lohri.
  • Waistcoat: warmer than it looks, and less bulky than a jacket when you are seated.

What Is Worn for Pongal?

The traditional Pongal look is a silk veshti with an angavastram over a silk shirt or kurta, usually cream or off-white with a gold border. Across the four days, only Thai Pongal really needs the good clothes: Bhogi involves clearing out and burning, Mattu Pongal honours cattle, and Kaanum Pongal is for visiting. If you are having one thing made, make it the Thai Pongal set.

What Should You Wear to a Lohri Bonfire?

A fitted kurta rather than a loose one, a waistcoat or Nehru jacket for warmth and structure, and a shawl you can drape and control. Avoid loose stoles, trailing ends and synthetic fabric near the fire: synthetics melt rather than char, and anything that hangs is a hazard in a crowd circling a bonfire. Darker tones earn their place here, because embers and ash are part of the evening.

Which Fabrics Work Best in January?

  • Cotton-silk: the workhorse. Warm at dawn, breathable by noon, festive in photographs.
  • Raw or matka silk: matte, textured, slightly warmer, and a good base for restrained embroidery.
  • Pure silk: for the main day, where you are seated and photographed.
  • Avoid: heavy zari for kite flying, and synthetics near any flame.

Can One Kurta Cover All Three?

Yes, and it is the sensible plan. A mid-weight cream or ivory cotton-silk kurta, cut mid-thigh, with a separate bundi in a contrasting cloth, covers every version of the week. With the bundi at a dawn Sankranti puja it reads traditional; open at a Pongal lunch it reads relaxed; with a shawl instead at a Lohri bonfire it reads northern. The same set carries into a daytime engagement or a temple visit for the rest of the year.

What Does It Cost, and How Long Does It Take?

GarmentFromTypical rangeLead time
Designer Kurtas & Bundi Sets₹5,500₹5,500 – ₹25,000+1–2 weeks (4–8 weeks if hand-embroidered)

Our published starting prices and typical ranges, plus the usual studio lead time before the fitting. Every commission is quoted individually at the consultation, because cloth, construction and the hours of hand embroidery move the figure more than anything else. Unstitched silks such as a veshti, panche or mundu are not included.

How Early Should You Order?

What you wantHow long it takesWhen to start
Plain cotton or cotton-silk kurta1 to 2 weeks, plus the fitting3 weeks ahead
Kurta with a bundi or Nehru jacket2 to 3 weeks4 to 5 weeks ahead
Hand-embroidered silk kurta4 to 8 weeks2 months ahead

Bespoke kurta sets at our Basavanagudi studio start from ₹5,500 and run to ₹25,000 and beyond, depending on cloth and how much of the garment is worked by hand. Every kurta is drafted from roughly 20 to 25 of your own measurements and cut from our own fabric library. One fitting is standard before the garment is finished, and alterations are covered for one month after delivery or until the garment has been worn, whichever comes first.

If your date is closer than the table allows, our Express service offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design.

Frequently Asked Questions

A silk or cotton-silk kurta in cream, ivory or gold with mustard or turmeric accents, layered with a bundi or Nehru jacket for the early morning. The day usually runs from a dawn temple visit through family visits and the ellu-bella exchange, so pick a layer you can take off by midday rather than a heavy single garment.

A silk veshti with an angavastram, worn with a silk shirt or a kurta, most often in cream or off-white with a gold border. Pongal runs across four days, from Bhogi through Thai Pongal and Mattu Pongal to Kaanum Pongal, so most families want one good traditional set plus a simpler kurta for the visiting days.

Lohri is an evening spent outdoors around a bonfire, so warmth and safety decide the outfit. A fitted kurta with a waistcoat or Nehru jacket, plus a shawl you can drape and control, works better than a loose stole. Keep synthetic fabrics away from the fire, and secure anything that hangs.

For an early-morning festival, yes. Mid-January mornings are the coolest of the Bengaluru year and these events start at dawn, so a bundi, Nehru jacket or shawl over a kurta is comfortable at 7am and easy to remove once the sun is up. A heavier cloth than you would choose for Diwali is the right call.

Usually yes, if you plan it as a set. A cream or ivory silk kurta reads correctly at all three, and the jacket, shawl and footwear do the regional work: a bundi for Sankranti visits, an angavastram and veshti pairing for Pongal, a warmer jacket and shawl for a Lohri bonfire.

Two to three weeks for a made-to-measure kurta set, and four to eight weeks if you want hand embroidery. Work backwards from the first morning you need it, not the last day of the festival, and allow for the fitting. If the date is close, ask about Express, which offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design.
