The Atelier

Uncompromisingly
Black

Black is harder to photograph than any other colour, and that is the whole design problem. A flat black cotton-blend absorbs light and collapses into a silhouette under a camera flash, so you lose the cut entirely. A fine wool, raw silk or velvet holds texture and returns light, which is what keeps the garment reading as a garment in the photographs you will actually keep.

So the Black Edition is built around fabric behaviour rather than colour matching. Satin-faced lapels against a matte wool body, black-on-black tonal embroidery, bead work that catches light without breaking the monochrome. The contrast is created within the black rather than added against it.

Accessorising is where monochrome usually goes wrong. One considered metal detail is enough; loading a black outfit with competing accessories defeats the restraint that made it worth doing. We assess every Black Edition piece under both daylight and warm venue lighting before finalising, because black reads very differently depending on what it is woven from.

The Art of Cloth: Fabric Glossary

A bespoke garment is only as exceptional as the cloth it is cut from, and the right choice changes by occasion, not just by taste. Here is a brief guide to the luxury weaves and finishes we offer, and which ceremony each one suits best.

Pure Silk & Brocade

The gold standard for wedding sherwanis. Known for its natural sheen and structured drape, silk brocade is often interwoven with gold or silver zarian threads for a royal aesthetic.

Best for: Muhurtham, Sherwani ceremonies

Super 120s to 150s Wool

Premium Italian wool ideal for bespoke suits and tuxedos. The "Super" number indicates the fineness of the yarn. Higher numbers mean a softer, more luxurious drape perfect for evening wear.

Best for: Reception, Sangeet suits

Raw Silk & Matka

Characterized by its textured, slightly nubby surface, raw silk offers a rich, matte finish. It is highly preferred for Indo-Westerns and Jodhpuris for a sophisticated, non-shiny look.

Best for: Baraat, Sangeet, Indo-Western looks

Velvet

A plush, heavy fabric that catches light beautifully. Used predominantly for regal reception tuxedos, statement blazers, or intricate hand-embroidered collars and cuffs.

Best for: Reception, evening functions

Cotton & Linen

Breathable and lightweight, these fabrics are built for daytime heat and long hours of movement rather than sheen or weight. Unlike silk or velvet, they stay comfortable through a full ceremony in direct sun.

Best for: Haldi, Mehendi kurtas

The Process

Crafting Your Black Comes to Life

01

Consultation

A direct sitting with founder Chirag Parmar under both daylight and warm venue lighting, since black reads differently under each.

02

Fabric Selection

Fine wool, raw silk or velvet, chosen for how each holds texture and returns light rather than by colour alone.

03

Precise Measurements

A pattern drafted to your own proportions, so the cut still reads clearly once the fabric absorbs the light around it.

04

Detailing & Fitting

Satin-faced lapels, tonal embroidery and bead work built within the black rather than added against it, refined across fittings.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Black Edition is our curated line dedicated entirely to black and dark monochrome bespoke menswear, including suits, tuxedos and fusion wear, built around fabric behaviour rather than colour matching. Black is harder to photograph than any other colour, since a flat black cotton-blend absorbs light and collapses into a silhouette under a camera flash, losing the cut entirely. A fine wool, raw silk or velvet holds texture and returns light instead, which is what keeps the garment reading as a garment in the photographs you will actually keep. Every piece in the collection is assessed under both daylight and warm venue lighting before it is finalised, because black reads very differently depending on what it is woven from.

Yes. Black is not one fabric, it is a behaviour, so we work across fine wool for a matte, structured base, raw silk for subtle sheen, and velvet for the richest depth under evening light. Satin-faced lapels against a matte wool body, black-on-black tonal embroidery, and bead work that catches light without breaking the monochrome are how contrast gets built within the black rather than added against it. One considered metal detail is usually enough on a Black Edition piece, since loading it with competing accessories defeats the restraint that made the outfit worth doing. We talk through fabric and finish together at the consultation rather than picking from a swatch alone.

Absolutely. We specialize in made-to-measure black suits and formalwear at our Basavanagudi studio, built with the same half- or full-canvas construction as the rest of our tailoring rather than fused interlining. Founder Chirag Parmar handles the consultation directly, discussing where and under what lighting the suit will actually be worn, since that decides whether fine wool, raw silk or velvet is the right base fabric. The pattern is drafted from your own measurements, and fittings are built into the timeline so the finished suit holds its line rather than reading flat in photographs, which is the most common failure point with an all-black outfit.

Black is incredibly popular for evening functions like sangeets, cocktail nights and receptions, and we design black tuxedos, suits and Indo-Western pieces specifically for these events. It tends to sit less well at daytime or strictly traditional ceremonies, where families often expect lighter or more festive colour, so we usually place Black Edition pieces at the evening functions rather than the main ceremony. Within those evening functions it reads as a confident, understated choice against the more heavily embroidered options other guests and groomsmen tend to wear, which is part of why grooms specifically request it for the reception or a cocktail night.
