What Makes Haldi Different From Every Other Function?
It is the only one where the outfit is expected to be ruined. Turmeric paste is applied liberally, often by people enjoying themselves enormously, and it stains permanently. That single fact should drive every decision: this is not the garment to spend the most on, and it is not the garment to wear anything precious with.

Does Turmeric Really Never Come Out?
Largely, no. Fresh turmeric on cotton can be reduced by rinsing in cold water immediately and washing separately, and sunlight fades the residue over time, but a full-strength paste will leave a permanent cast on most fabrics. Treat the Haldi kurta as a one-occasion garment and choose accordingly. Do not wear silk, and do not wear anything with metallic thread.
Should You Wear White?
White is traditional in many families precisely because the turmeric is meant to show, and it photographs beautifully. It is also completely finished afterwards. If you want the garment to survive, a bright mustard, teal, peach or green hides the staining far better while still reading as festive. Either is correct; just decide knowingly.
What About the Mehendi?
Keep the two outfits distinct. They are often on consecutive days and heavily photographed, and wearing near-identical kurtas to both is a wasted opportunity. The Mehendi garment can be the better one, since henna is far kinder to cloth than turmeric. See Mehendi outfits.
