What Does Cocktail Actually Mean on an Indian Invitation?
It is the least-understood line on any wedding card. It sits above a business suit and below black tie, and because almost nobody defines it, most men resolve it by wearing their office suit. That reads as under-dressed. The useful way to think about cocktail is that it is the one evening where texture does the work that embellishment does elsewhere.

Why Texture Rather Than Embroidery?
Because cocktail lighting is low and warm, and it flattens flat cloth into a silhouette. Velvet, brocade and jacquard all catch light at different angles, which gives the camera and the room something to read without tipping into ceremonial territory. A plain black suit under the same lighting simply disappears.
What Works?
- Structured jacket in velvet, brocade or jacquard over a plain shirt. The most reliable answer.
- Three-piece with a statement waistcoat: holds up better if the jacket comes off late in the evening.
- Bandhgala: entirely appropriate, and a good way to keep an Indian register.
- Colours: bottle green, wine, midnight blue, charcoal with texture.
Can You Reuse It at the Reception?
Only if the two events have different guest lists. If the same people attend both, the photographs will show it. Where budget is tight, the better split is one strong jacket for the cocktail evening and a distinctly different silhouette for the reception, rather than two similar suits. See reception outfits.
