The Atelier

The Modern
Maharaja

The Bandhgala is the least forgiving jacket we make. There is no lapel to break up the chest and no open collar to soften the neckline, so every error in the fit is visible. The mandarin collar has to sit against the neck without gaping, the shoulder has to follow your actual slope, and the closure has to run dead straight from throat to hem.

Traditionally cut in solid wool or silk, we build it in raw silk, textured velvet and jacquard, usually with tonal embroidery held to the collar and cuffs. Restraint suits this silhouette: the Bandhgala's authority comes from its line, and heavy all-over work tends to fight that line rather than add to it.

Modern grooms pair it with slim tailored trousers rather than the historically flared jodhpurs, which keeps the proportion contemporary while the jacket itself stays traditional. It is among the most versatile pieces in a wedding wardrobe, working equally well at an engagement, a sangeet or a reception.

The Art of Cloth: Fabric Glossary

A bespoke garment is only as exceptional as the cloth it is cut from, and the right choice changes by occasion, not just by taste. Here is a brief guide to the luxury weaves and finishes we offer, and which ceremony each one suits best.

Pure Silk & Brocade

The gold standard for wedding sherwanis. Known for its natural sheen and structured drape, silk brocade is often interwoven with gold or silver zarian threads for a royal aesthetic.

Best for: Muhurtham, Sherwani ceremonies

Super 120s to 150s Wool

Premium Italian wool ideal for bespoke suits and tuxedos. The "Super" number indicates the fineness of the yarn. Higher numbers mean a softer, more luxurious drape perfect for evening wear.

Best for: Reception, Sangeet suits

Raw Silk & Matka

Characterized by its textured, slightly nubby surface, raw silk offers a rich, matte finish. It is highly preferred for Indo-Westerns and Jodhpuris for a sophisticated, non-shiny look.

Best for: Baraat, Sangeet, Indo-Western looks

Velvet

A plush, heavy fabric that catches light beautifully. Used predominantly for regal reception tuxedos, statement blazers, or intricate hand-embroidered collars and cuffs.

Best for: Reception, evening functions

Cotton & Linen

Breathable and lightweight, these fabrics are built for daytime heat and long hours of movement rather than sheen or weight. Unlike silk or velvet, they stay comfortable through a full ceremony in direct sun.

Best for: Haldi, Mehendi kurtas

The mandarin collar drafted to sit against your neck without gaping, the closure cut dead straight from throat to hem.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Jodhpuri suit, also known as a Bandhgala for its closed, buttoned collar, is a formal Indian suit built around a structured jacket with a mandarin collar, typically worn with matching slim tailored trousers rather than the historically flared jodhpurs. It is the least forgiving jacket in menswear to get wrong: there is no lapel to break up the chest and no open collar to soften the neckline, so any error in the fit is immediately visible. The mandarin collar has to sit against the neck without gaping, the shoulder has to follow your actual slope, and the closure has to run dead straight from throat to hem, which is why it rewards a properly drafted pattern more than almost any other garment.

Chirag Parmar Signatures in Basavanagudi specializes in custom, made-to-measure Jodhpuri and Bandhgala suits for men. Founder Chirag Parmar handles each consultation directly, since the Bandhgala's authority comes entirely from its line and there is no lapel or open collar to distract from a fit error. We work in raw silk, textured velvet and jacquard, usually with tonal embroidery held to the collar and cuffs rather than spread across the body, since heavy all-over work tends to fight the silhouette rather than add to it. The pattern is drafted to your actual shoulder slope and neck, with fittings built into the timeline before the piece is finished.

Yes, it is one of the most regal and sophisticated choices for evening wedding functions like receptions, sangeets and engagement ceremonies, and it is among the most versatile pieces in a wedding wardrobe since it works equally well across all three. Paired with slim tailored trousers rather than the historically flared jodhpurs, it reads as contemporary while the jacket itself stays traditional, which suits grooms who want a regal silhouette without the full weight of a heavily embroidered sherwani. It also carries well into a business or formal event afterward, since a well-cut Bandhgala in a solid or subtly textured fabric does not read as wedding-specific the way a heavily worked sherwani does.

A bespoke Jodhpuri typically takes three to four weeks to tailor, ensuring the canvas, structure and fit are correct before any embroidery is added. Because the Bandhgala has no lapel to hide an imperfect shoulder line, we build in at least one trial fitting partway through construction rather than only at collection, so the collar and closure can be adjusted while changes are still straightforward. Tonal embroidery on the collar and cuffs, where the design calls for it, is worked in-house alongside the tailoring rather than after it, which is part of why the timeline runs slightly longer than a plain business suit despite the more restrained decoration.
