Navratri & Dasara
Styling Guide

A designer Navratri kurta has to do two jobs, because the nine nights are not one occasion but several. In Karnataka that means golu and bombe displays at home, temple visits, Ayudha Puja for tools and vehicles, and the Dasara processions that make Mysuru famous; in Bengaluru it also means garba and dandiya floors that run late and leave you soaked through. At Chirag Parmar Signatures in Basavanagudi we tailor for both halves of that: silk you can stand in for a puja, and cotton you can actually dance in.

For garba and dandiya, weight is the whole decision. A cotton or cotton-silk kurta with a generous sweep, worn a touch shorter than your wedding kurtas, moves with you and dries between sets, where a heavy brocade turns into a sauna by the third song. Keep the embroidery to the placket and cuffs so the body of the garment stays light, and choose sleeves you can roll. For Ayudha Puja and Vijayadashami, the register changes: a silk kurta or jubba in ivory, cream, mustard or a deep jewel tone, with a Nehru jacket or bundi if the morning is cool. Many families follow a colour for each day of the nine nights, so if yours does, tell us at the consultation and we will plan the set around that sequence rather than one outfit. Footwear comes off constantly at temples and at home, so mojaris or slip-ons beat anything with laces.

Navratri & Dasara Guide

What Does a Man Actually Wear Across Navratri?

Navratri is not one occasion but a run of them, and the outfits are pulled in two directions. The garba and dandiya nights are physical: hours of movement, close crowds and heat. The puja mornings are the opposite, seated and photographed. Dressing for one and wearing it to the other is the single most common mistake.

VijayadashamiKurta with a bundi, or a full silk setThe most formal day of the run

Which Fabric Is Best for Garba and Dandiya?

Cotton first, cotton-silk second. A dandiya night involves continuous movement under warm light in a packed hall, and the fabric has to move air. Pure silk looks right in photographs and behaves badly after an hour of it. If you want one garment that carries both the dancing and the puja, choose a mid-weight cotton-silk: it reads festive, it breathes, and it presses back into shape.

  • Cotton: the honest choice for the dancing nights.
  • Cotton-silk: the best single compromise across the whole run.
  • Raw or matka silk: matte and textured, right for the puja mornings.
  • Avoid: heavy zari and dense handwork on a dancing night; it is weight you carry for hours.

How Should a Navratri Kurta Fit?

A dancing kurta is cut differently from a ceremonial one, and the differences are easy to state.

  • Length: mid-thigh or shorter. A long hem wraps the legs during garba.
  • Armhole: cut for a raised arm. This is the detail that separates a kurta you can dance in from one you cannot.
  • Shoulder: the seam ends where your shoulder ends, or a bundi over it will never sit clean.
  • Sleeves: a firm cuff if you intend to roll them, which you will.
  • Ease: enough room to sit cross-legged and eat more than once.

Do You Have to Follow the Nine Colours?

The nine-colour convention is followed closely in some circles, particularly in Gujarati communities, and treated loosely or ignored in others. It is not an obligation. If your group is following it, one or two garments in the brighter assigned colours plus a neutral base carries the week without commissioning nine outfits. If it is not, choose colours that suit you and the light you will be photographed in: jewel tones for evening halls, cleaner ivory, cream and pastel shades for daytime puja. Our groom colour combination guide goes into undertones.

What About Dasara in Karnataka?

In Karnataka the emphasis shifts from garba to Ayudha Puja and Vijayadashami, which are seated, daytime and family-centred rather than a dance floor. That makes silk and cotton-silk the sensible base, with a bundi or Nehru jacket for the more formal of the two days. Mysuru observes the festival at a scale of its own, and the register there is traditional rather than contemporary.

Caring for the Garments Between Nights

Air a kurta after each night rather than folding it away warm, and hang it on a shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their line. Spot-clean quickly, dry-clean sparingly, and store anything embroidered with muslin between the folds so the work does not catch. Two kurtas rotated across a nine-night run will outlast one worn repeatedly.

What Does It Cost, and How Long Does It Take?

GarmentFromTypical rangeLead time
Designer Kurtas & Bundi Sets₹5,500₹5,500 – ₹25,000+1–2 weeks (4–8 weeks if hand-embroidered)

Our published starting prices and typical ranges, plus the usual studio lead time before the fitting. Every commission is quoted individually at the consultation, because cloth, construction and the hours of hand embroidery move the figure more than anything else. Unstitched silks such as a veshti, panche or mundu are not included.

How Early Should You Order?

What you wantHow long it takesWhen to start
Plain cotton or cotton-silk kurta1 to 2 weeks, plus the fitting3 weeks ahead
Kurta with a bundi or Nehru jacket2 to 3 weeks4 to 5 weeks ahead
Hand-embroidered silk kurta4 to 8 weeks2 months ahead

Bespoke kurta sets at our Basavanagudi studio start from ₹5,500 and run to ₹25,000 and beyond, depending on cloth and how much of the garment is worked by hand. Every kurta is drafted from roughly 20 to 25 of your own measurements and cut from our own fabric library. One fitting is standard before the garment is finished, and alterations are covered for one month after delivery or until the garment has been worn, whichever comes first.

If your date is closer than the table allows, our Express service offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Split it by function. For garba and dandiya nights, a cotton or cotton-silk kurta with a full sweep, cut slightly shorter than a wedding kurta, with embroidery kept to the placket and cuffs so the garment stays light. For Ayudha Puja, temple visits and Vijayadashami, a silk kurta or jubba in ivory, cream, mustard or a jewel tone, with a Nehru jacket or bundi if the morning is cool.

Two usually covers it: one light cotton or cotton-silk set for the garba and dandiya nights, and one silk set for Ayudha Puja, golu visits and Vijayadashami. Change the register between them with a bundi or Nehru jacket, a stole and different footwear rather than commissioning a garment for every night.

Cotton, cotton-silk and fine linen. You will be dancing for hours under lights in a crowd, and breathability matters more than sheen. Pure brocade and heavy zari look excellent standing still and become unbearable once the floor fills up. If you want some shine, keep it to a jacket you can take off.

Traditional and simple. A silk kurta or jubba, or a panche with a shirt if that is your family custom, in ivory, cream or a warm traditional tone. The puja is usually held in the morning at home or at the workplace, so comfort while sitting and easy footwear matter as much as the outfit itself.

If your family does, we plan around it. The colour for each day varies by region and by year, so bring the sequence your family follows to the consultation and we will build a set that covers it without nine separate commissions, usually by pairing two or three kurtas with jackets and stoles that shift the palette.

Allow 2 to 3 weeks for a made-to-measure kurta set and longer if you want hand embroidery. October is a busy stretch at the studio because Navratri, Dasara and Diwali fall close together, so booking a month ahead is safer than the final fortnight. If the date is close, ask about Express, which offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design.
