Nischitartham
Styling Guide

The Nischitartham, also called Vaagdanam in many Telugu families, is the formal betrothal at which the match is publicly committed and the lagna patrika is read. It sits closer to the Tamil Nischayathartham than to a North Indian Sagai in register: traditional, daytime, and family-centred rather than a banquet occasion. At Chirag Parmar Signatures in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, we design for that traditional weight.

Families from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana often hold it at home or in a function hall, with elders from both sides present. The lagna patrika reading is usually the formal centre of the event, conducted with elders and the couple seated together, so the same seated-ease consideration that shapes a Muhurtham outfit applies here as well, even on a garment worn for a single afternoon rather than a full wedding day.

A traditional pancha paired with a silk kurta or angavastram is the most common choice, in cream, ivory, or soft gold. Telugu ceremonies frequently begin early and run long, so breathability matters more than embellishment: pure silk and silk-cotton blends hold their drape and stay wearable through a long seated ritual where a heavier brocade would not. Where a family is more contemporary, a finely embroidered silk kurta set with a light Nehru jacket is a comfortable middle ground.

A kanduva or uttariyam over the shoulder adds a traditional finish, and coordinating the zari with the bride’s silk saree ties the two looks together. Because these ceremonies often run in the heat of the day, we favour a lighter silk-cotton over a denser pure silk for the pancha and kurta, since it breathes through a long seated ritual without losing the sheen that reads correctly under indoor function-hall lighting.

Nischitartham Guide

What Is the Nischitartham, and How Is It Different?

The Telugu betrothal, also called Vaagdanam in many families, is where the match is publicly committed and the lagna patrika, the written marriage agreement, is read aloud. It sits much closer to the Tamil Nischayathartham than to a North Indian Sagai: traditional, daytime and family-led rather than a photographed evening party.

Why Does Breathability Matter More Here?

Telugu ceremonies frequently begin at an hour fixed by the almanac rather than by convenience, and they run long. You may be dressed before dawn and still in the same garment by midday, seated for most of it. Pure silk and silk-cotton hold their drape through that; heavy brocade and dense embroidery become a burden by the third hour. Choose the cloth for the duration, not the photograph.

What About the Pancha?

A pancha paired with a silk kurta or angavastram is the most common choice, in cream, ivory or soft gold. If you are not accustomed to wearing one, wear it at home for an hour before the day so the drape and the walk are familiar. Keep the kurta length and sleeve cut so the whole reads as one garment rather than two halves.

Every garment is drafted from roughly 20 to 25 of your own measurements and cut from our own fabric library. One fitting is standard before the garment is finished, and alterations are covered for one month after delivery or until the garment has been worn, whichever comes first. "

For our Telugu Nischitartham in Hyderabad, Chirag designed a pure tussar silk kurta and coordinated zari kanduva to pair with our ancestral pancha. The fit across the shoulders gave a commanding, royal presence.

Srinivas Raju · Client feedback
"

Chirag understands the regional nuances of Andhra and Telangana engagement ceremonies. The fabric was breathable for coastal warmth, and the collar did not pinch.

Vamsi Krishna · Client feedback
"

We travelled from Vijayawada to the Basavanagudi atelier. Chirag measured me with great patience, and the finished silk ensemble arrived with zero alterations required.

Chaitanya Varma · Client feedback
"

The attention to how the kanduva drapes over the shoulder without sliding off was a small detail that made a massive practical difference during the betrothal rituals.

Frequently Asked Questions

A traditional pancha with a silk kurta or angavastram, in cream, ivory, or soft gold, is the most common choice for a Telugu betrothal. These ceremonies often begin early and run long, so breathable pure silk or silk-cotton holds up better through a long seated ritual than heavier brocade.

The terms are used closely and often interchangeably across Telugu families, both referring to the formal betrothal at which the match is committed and the lagna patrika is read. Practices and naming vary by family and region, so we ask what your family calls the event and what it involves before advising on dress.

Yes. The betrothal outfit should sit a clear step below the wedding-day wardrobe in embroidery and richness, so the two read differently in photographs. Grooms often keep the betrothal look to fine plain silk and reserve heavy zardozi or embellishment for the ceremony and reception.

Cream, ivory and soft gold are the most traditional, often with a zari border. Some families choose brighter silks, so check expectations with the elders before finalising.
