How Many Outfits Does a South Indian Groom Need?

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu weddings often stretch over two or three days and several functions, each with its own mood, time of day and expectations. The most common mistake grooms make is choosing each outfit separately. The result is three jewel-toned jackets in a row, or two looks that are indistinguishable in the album. Planning the whole wardrobe together, with a clear role for each function, gives a better set of photographs and usually a better budget.

Customs differ between communities, regions and families, so treat this as a guide to the usual shape of a wedding rather than a rulebook, and check the details with the elders who are organising the rituals.

Karnataka: The Usual Sequence

Engagement (Nischitartha)

Pre-wedding rituals and haldi

Daytime and family-centred. Light cotton or cotton-silk kurtas in festive colours are practical, because turmeric and water are part of many haldi celebrations. See haldi outfits.

Kashi Yatre

In many Kannada weddings the groom sets off on a symbolic pilgrimage to Kashi with an umbrella and walking stick, and is persuaded to return and marry. He is usually already in traditional attire, so choose footwear that is easy to walk in and slip off.

Muhurtha: Dhare Herdu and Mangalya Dharane

The sacred ceremony centres on rituals such as Dhare Herdu, in which the bride’s parents pour sacred water over the couple’s joined hands, and Mangalya Dharane, when the groom ties the mangalya around the bride’s neck, followed by Saptapadi, the seven steps. The traditional attire is a silk panche with a shalya or angavastra in ivory, cream or gold, often with a Mysore peta. Reception

Tamil Nadu: The Usual Sequence

Nichayathartham

The engagement, often held months before the wedding or the day before it. A silk shirt with a veshti, a kurta set or a bandhgala are all common, depending on the family. See Nischayathartham outfits.

Pre-wedding rituals

Functions such as the pandhakaal muhurtham and nalangu are family occasions where a comfortable silk or cotton-silk kurta or veshti works well.

Kashi Yatra and Oonjal

Before the main ceremony, many Tamil weddings include the Kashi Yatra, where the groom sets off with an umbrella, walking stick and provisions before the bride’s father persuades him to return, and the Oonjal, where the couple sit on a decorated swing while women of the family sing and offer milk and banana. Muhurtham

The groom traditionally wears a silk veshti with a zari border and an angavastram, usually in cream, ivory or gold, coordinated in tone with the bride’s Kanjeevaram saree.

The Ceremony Look in Detail

Veshti or panche

Both are unstitched lengths of cloth wrapped at the waist. For the ceremony they are usually pure silk with a zari border. Border width signals formality, and the zari tone should be matched to the bride’s saree and jewellery. If you are not used to tying one, practise with the actual cloth, or choose a ready-stitched version that looks the same once worn.

Angavastram, shalya and peta

The angavastram or shalya is the upper cloth draped over the shoulder, usually matching the border of the veshti or panche. In Karnataka, the Mysore peta, a turban with a gold-bordered band, is a distinctive finishing piece, particularly in Mysuru and Old Mysore families.

The silk kurta or jubba

Where a top is worn, a silk kurta or jubba in the same tone as the veshti keeps the look coherent. Keep embroidery at the collar, placket and cuffs, and match its metal tone to the zari rather than introducing a brighter gold.

Which Fabrics Suit the South Indian Climate?

Pure silk is the traditional choice for the ceremony because it drapes cleanly through long seated rituals and holds zari and embroidery well. For daytime functions in humid weather, cotton-silk and linen blends keep the groom comfortable. Bengaluru’s cool evenings between roughly November and February allow velvet and heavier wool for receptions; Chennai’s heat usually does not.

Building a Palette Across the Wedding

• Give the muhurtham the classic tones: ivory, cream and gold.
• Use pastels or bright festive colours for daytime pre-wedding functions.
• Save deep jewel tones, black or ivory tailoring for the reception.
• Vary texture as well as colour, so silk, brocade and wool each have their moment.

When Should a Groom Start Ordering?

Accessories and Footwear for the Ceremony

• Secure the angavastram or shalya. It slips during long seated rituals and around the sacred fire, so a discreet pin at the shoulder keeps it in place.
• Keep jewellery simple. A chain or mala, a ring and perhaps a bracelet are enough; heavy layering gets in the way during the rituals.
• Choose footwear you can slip off. Footwear comes off at the mandap, and the Kashi Yatra involves walking, so sandals or mojaris that are easy to remove and comfortable to walk in are the practical choice.
• Plan a waistband solution. A veshti or panche must stay secure through hours of sitting and standing; practise the fold, or use a ready-stitched version with a secure fastening.
• Carry a spare upper cloth. Rice, turmeric and kumkum are used in several rituals, and a fresh angavastram keeps the later photographs clean.

Caring for Silk Veshtis and Panches

A silk veshti or panche with real or tested zari is often kept for years and worn again at family functions. Have it dry cleaned rather than washed, and store it folded in soft cotton or muslin instead of plastic, which traps moisture. Refold it along different lines every few months so the zari border does not crack at the creases, and air it away from direct sunlight, which fades silk and dulls the metallic thread.
