Telugu Groom Dress: Pancha, Kanduva & What to Wear to Each Ritual

A Telugu wedding is not one outfit but a sequence of them. Across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the rituals run from the formal engagement through turmeric cleansing, the Snathakam and Kashi Yatra, to the muhurtham itself and, in most families today, an evening reception. Each asks something different of the groom: clothes that can be stained, clothes that follow custom exactly, and clothes that need to look sharp under stage lights for three hours.

Customs vary between communities, regions and families, so treat this guide as a map rather than a rulebook, and confirm details with the family priest and elders. What follows is what a Telugu groom typically wears at each stage, how the traditional pancha and kanduva work, and where tailored pieces fit in.

What Does a Telugu Groom Wear to Each Ritual?

The order below follows the sequence set out in accounts of the Telugu Hindu wedding. Not every family holds every ritual, and some are combined on the same day.

The Muhurtham Look: Pancha, Kanduva and Basikam

The pancha

Pancha is the Telugu word for the dhoti, and pattu pancha means a silk one. For the wedding rituals it is most often white or cream, with a border in gold zari, red or another auspicious colour; one widely cited description is a white dhoti with a red border, white for purity and red for strength. The pancha is an unstitched length of cloth wrapped and tucked at the waist, which is why the rituals call for it: it is the form of dress custom expects at the sacred fire.

Border width signals formality. A narrow zari border looks restrained and suits a smaller ceremony; a broad border with woven motifs looks grander and photographs well from across the mandapam. If you have never tied a pancha, practise with the actual cloth a week before, or choose a ready-to-wear stitched version that looks the same once on. A secure fold matters more than it sounds, because the rituals involve sitting, standing and walking around the fire many times.

The kanduva

The kanduva, also called the uttariyam, is the matching upper cloth draped over the shoulder. It usually repeats the pancha’s border so the two read as a set. Some grooms also wear a silk shirt or kurta; others follow family custom and wear the kanduva alone for the rituals. Ask early, because this decides whether you need a tailored top at all.

The basikam

The basikam is the decorated band tied across the groom’s forehead, and it is one of the clearest visual markers of a Telugu wedding. Families often keep it simple, in gold-toned or pearl work, so it frames the face rather than competing with it. A chain or mala and rings complete the look; heavy layering tends to get in the way during Talambralu and Saptapadi.

Coordinating With the Bride

Telugu brides often wear silk from the weaving centres of the two states, including Dharmavaram, Uppada and Venkatagiri in Andhra Pradesh and Gadwal and Pochampally in Telangana, as well as Kanchipuram silk from neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The groom does not need to match her colour. Matching the tone of the zari, gold with gold or antique with antique, is what makes the couple look deliberate together. If her saree has a strong contrast border, a groom’s kanduva border in the same colour ties the pair together without dressing him in her palette.

Practical Notes for the Rituals

• Talambralu stains. Rice mixed with turmeric is showered over the couple. On pale silk, that can leave yellow marks, so keep a spare kanduva for the photographs afterwards.
• Timing. The muhurtham is set by the family priest and is often early in the morning. Plan dressing time backwards from it, including time to tie the pancha properly.
• Heat. Summers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are severe. For April and May weddings, choose a lighter pattu or silk-cotton pancha and avoid layering a heavy kurta under the kanduva.
• Footwear. Footwear comes off at the mandapam, so choose sandals or mojaris that slip on and off easily for the walk in and the Kashi Yatra.
• Pellikoduku clothes. Turmeric does not wash out of silk, so wear old cotton for the turmeric ritual and change afterwards.

How Do You Choose the Pancha Cloth?

Not every silk pancha behaves the same way, and the difference shows in the photographs and in how comfortable you are by the end of the rituals.

• Pure silk (pattu): the traditional choice, with a soft sheen and a heavier drape that holds its folds well. It is warm, so it suits cooler months and air-conditioned halls best.
• Silk-cotton: lighter and more breathable, with a gentler sheen. For a summer muhurtham or a long ritual day, it is often the more practical choice.
• Tissue: woven with metallic zari through the body of the cloth, giving a bright, reflective finish. It photographs dramatically but is stiffer and warmer, and it can look harsh under direct flash.

Whichever you choose, check the zari tone against the bride’s saree in daylight rather than under shop lighting. After the wedding, have the pancha and kanduva dry cleaned, store them wrapped in soft cotton rather than plastic, and refold them along different lines every few months so the zari does not crack at the creases.

Many Telugu families also hold a Satyanarayana Vratam at home after the wedding. It is a quieter, more intimate function, and a silk kurta or a lighter pancha with a silk shirt suits it better than repeating the full ceremony look.

Nischitartham: The First Formal Look

The Nischitartham is where many families first see the couple dressed as a pair, and it offers more freedom than the muhurtham. Traditional families keep to pancha with a silk shirt; many grooms now wear a silk kurta with a Nehru jacket or a bandhgala, which is formal without pre-empting the wedding look. The Reception: Where Tailoring Takes Over

The Telugu reception has moved decisively towards tailoring. Suits and tuxedos are common in hotel and convention venues, bandhgalas are popular with families who want an Indian silhouette, and in Hyderabad in particular the long sherwani remains a strong choice. Because the reception usually follows a long ritual day, comfort matters: a breathable lining, trousers with enough room to sit, and a jacket that can survive hours of greeting guests on stage.

Colour works best when it contrasts with the cream and gold of the muhurtham. Midnight blue, bottle green and wine stand out against a stage backdrop and look richer than black under warm lighting. What the Groom’s Family Wears

For the rituals, the groom’s father and brothers usually wear pancha with a silk shirt or kurta, often with a narrower border than the groom’s so he remains the focus. At the reception, coordinated bandhgalas or suits in a shared colour family photograph well, as long as the groom’s outfit is clearly the richest or lightest in the group.

When Should a Telugu Groom Start Planning?

1. Three to four months out: agree the function list and who wears what with both families.
2. Two to three months out: buy the pancha and kanduva from a silk house, and commission tailored pieces. Suits, tuxedos and embroidered sherwanis typically take one to six weeks depending on the design, but leave room for fittings.
3. Four weeks out: trial fittings for tailored garments.
4. One week out: a full dress rehearsal with the pancha tied, the basikam on and the shoes you will wear.
