How to Read Wedding Trends

Most trend lists are written from runway images. This one is grounded in finished commissions documented in our own case studies, with the dates they were first published, alongside the practical realities of dressing for Bengaluru and Chennai. The point is not to chase novelty but to understand which directions are becoming normal, so you can decide which suit you, and which will still look good in your photographs in ten years.

1. Ivory Dinner Jackets for the Reception

The black tuxedo is no longer the only answer for a formal reception. Ivory and off-white dinner jackets with black trousers have become a popular alternative, particularly for warm-weather receptions and celebrations where the groom wants to stand out against a dark stage. 2. Embellished Lapels, Plain Jackets

Rather than embroidering the whole jacket, many grooms now concentrate the detail on the lapel: gold beadwork, sequins or textured silk on an otherwise plain jacket. It gives a clear focal point beside the face, ties the suit to the gold in wedding jewellery, and keeps the look inside classic formalwear.

3. Tonal Embroidery on Tuxedos

Where the whole jacket is embellished, the embroidery is increasingly tonal, silver on navy or black on black, so the jacket reads as classic from across the room and reveals its detail up close. The navy sequin-embroidered reception tuxedo is a good example, with the embroidery running in long lines from the shoulders.

4. The Return of the Shawl Lapel

Shawl lapels, smooth and rounded with no notch, suit evening wear and embellished jackets because they give a clean, continuous line. Both of the reception jackets above use them. Peak lapels remain a strong, sharper choice, particularly for double-breasted and classic black-tie tuxedos.

5. Double-Breasted Jackets

After years in the background, double-breasted jackets are back at receptions and cocktail evenings. A 6x2 jacket with peak lapels has a strong, architectural presence and suits taller or slimmer builds especially well. 6. One-Colour and Pastel Looks

For daytime and pre-wedding functions, grooms are choosing single-colour outfits in soft tones such as lavender, sage and powder blue, with the jacket, kurta and trousers all in the same shade. A one-colour look lengthens the figure and photographs cleanly in daylight. The lavender brocade Indo-Western from April 2026 shows the idea: texture in the jacket front, and nothing else competing.

7. Lighter Cloths for Humid Cities

Comfort is finally a priority. Lightweight worsteds and high-twist wools are replacing heavy suiting for outdoor and daytime events. High-twist cloth has a long history: the best-known example, Fresco, was patented by Martin Sons and Company in 1907, using yarns twisted so tightly that the open weave stays open even when pressed, which lets air pass through the cloth. As Huddersfield Fine Worsteds’ account of Fresco describes, it is still made today, and several mills offer their own high-twist cloths. This matters most in Chennai, where heat and humidity are high for much of the year, but it applies in Bengaluru too: the city’s altitude of roughly 900 metres keeps it milder, yet a crowded banquet hall still gets warm.

8. Coordinated Brothers and Groomsmen

Matching or coordinated jackets for the groom’s brothers and closest friends have become part of the reception plan. Done well, each jacket is still cut for its wearer, so the group looks unified without looking like uniforms. Colour coordination with small variations, such as the same jacket with different bow ties, keeps the groom distinct.

9. Pleated Shirts and Statement Bow Ties

Pleated-front evening shirts and textured or embellished bow ties are doing more of the work that pocket squares and lapel pins used to do. They add formality and a little personality without adding weight to the jacket.

10. Jewel Tones Instead of Black

Midnight blue, bottle green and wine are replacing flat black for evening wear. Under warm banquet lighting, midnight blue often looks richer and deeper than black, which can collapse into a silhouette in photographs. Textured cloths, such as a jacquard or a fine velvet, help any dark colour keep its detail on camera.

11. Velvet for Winter Receptions

Velvet has moved beyond the bandhgala. Velvet dinner jackets in midnight blue, bottle green and burgundy, worn with black trousers, are a strong choice for Bengaluru’s cooler reception season from roughly November to February. Velvet absorbs light, so it looks deep and rich under warm banquet lighting and holds its colour in photographs. It is warm, though, so keep it for air-conditioned or evening venues, and ask for a lighter lining where possible.

A Reception Look, Built Step by Step

1. Jacket: a single-button midnight blue jacket with a shawl lapel, in lightweight wool or, for winter, velvet.
2. Trousers: black or matching midnight, with a mid to high rise and little or no break.
3. Shirt: white, with a pleated bib front, fastened with studs.
4. Bow tie: black, in silk or a subtly textured finish.
5. Shoes: black patent or highly polished black oxfords or loafers.
6. One detail: a white or patterned pocket square, or embellishment on the lapel, but not both.

That combination is formal, photographs well and leaves room for personality in a single place.

Chennai and Bengaluru Are Not the Same Climate

What Will Last

Trends move; proportions do not. A jacket that fits your shoulders, a lapel in proportion to your chest, and trousers with the right rise and break will look good whatever the colour of the moment. If you want one trend-led piece, make it the reception jacket, and keep the cut classic.

How to Wear a Trend Without Dating Your Photographs

• Put the trend in one place. An embellished lapel or a jewel tone, not both plus a statement bow tie and a patterned shirt.
• Keep the base classic. A well-cut jacket in navy, midnight, ivory or charcoal ages far better than an unusual cut.
• Choose texture over novelty. A beautiful cloth looks current for years; a novelty silhouette rarely does.
• Think about wearing it again. A double-breasted jacket or an ivory dinner jacket can come out again at other people’s weddings.

Looks That Tend to Date Quickly

• All-over sequins on jacket and trousers: striking on the night, but hard to wear again and heavy under stage lights.
• Very short, very tight jackets: they pull when you sit, raise an arm or greet guests on stage for hours.
• Shiny synthetic suiting: it reflects flash harshly and traps heat.
• Too many statement pieces at once: a patterned shirt, embellished lapel, novelty bow tie and brooch together crowd the look.

Where the Budget Goes

Trend details are not equal in cost. Concentrating embellishment on the lapel usually costs far less than embroidering the whole jacket, because hand embroidery is priced in artisan hours. A fine velvet or a very high Super number wool raises the price of the cloth, while half- or full-canvas construction affects how the jacket wears over the years. If the budget is limited, put it into the cut and the cloth, and add one well-chosen detail.

Dressing the Groom’s Family

Trends apply to the wider family too. Fathers often look best in a classic navy or charcoal suit, or a bandhgala, rather than an embellished jacket, while brothers and friends can share a colour or lapel detail with the groom. Agree a palette early so everyone’s tailoring can be scheduled in time.
