Why Black Tie Has Rules
Black tie is the most codified dress code most men will ever wear. That sounds restrictive, but it is actually helpful: when every element has a correct form, it is easy to look polished. The rules also make it clear which departures look intentional and which look like mistakes, which matters for a groom whose reception photographs will be looked at for decades. Where the Tuxedo Came From
The dinner jacket began as a more comfortable alternative to the tailcoat. According to the history of black tie, the earliest record of a tailless coat worn for evening is a midnight blue silk smoking jacket ordered in 1865 by the future Edward VII from the Savile Row tailors Henry Poole and Co., for use at the royal estate at Sandringham. In the United States the garment took its name from Tuxedo Park, New York, after a group of young members appeared at the club’s first Autumn Ball in October 1886 in tailless dress coats, as society columns reported. Midnight blue, the colour of that first jacket, rivalled black by the mid-1930s and remains a popular alternative today.

The Jacket
- Colour: black or midnight blue. White or ivory dinner jackets are the traditional warm-weather alternative.
- Lapels: peak or shawl, faced in satin or grosgrain silk. Notch lapels are more at home on business suits.
- Buttons: single-breasted jackets traditionally fasten with one button; double-breasted tuxedos are always worn fastened.
- Pockets: jetted, without flaps, for a clean line.
- Vents: traditionally none, though side vents are common and practical today.
The Trousers
Tuxedo trousers are cut from the same cloth as the jacket, with a single braid of silk running down the outer seam to match the lapel facing. They are made without belt loops, held by side adjusters or braces, and finished without turn-ups.
The Shirt
- Colour: white.
- Front: a pleated or marcella (piqué) bib front.
- Collar: a turndown collar is standard for black tie. Wing collars are traditionally associated with white tie, though many men wear them with a tuxedo.
- Cuffs: French or double cuffs, fastened with cufflinks.
- Fastening: shirt studs in place of front buttons, often matched to the cufflinks.
The Bow Tie
A black silk bow tie that matches the lapel facing, satin with satin or grosgrain with grosgrain. A self-tie bow tie looks more natural than a pre-tied one because of its slight asymmetry. Long neckties are a modern departure and look less formal.
The Waist Covering
A tuxedo is designed so that no shirt shows between the trousers and the jacket button. A cummerbund, a pleated sash worn with the pleats facing upward, does this while staying cool, which suits most Indian receptions. A low-cut evening waistcoat is warmer and more formal, ideal for cool winter evenings.
Shoes, Socks and Finishing Details
- Black patent leather oxfords, or highly polished plain black oxfords.
- Black silk or fine wool socks, long enough that no skin shows when seated.
- A white linen or silk pocket square, folded simply.
- A slim dress watch on a leather strap, or no watch at all.
Studs, Cufflinks and Metals
Shirt studs and cufflinks are among the few pieces of jewellery black tie allows, so they are worth choosing carefully. Black onyx or mother-of-pearl set in silver or gold is classic and understated. Keep the metal consistent across studs, cufflinks, watch and any lapel detailing, so a gold-embellished lapel is not paired with silver studs. For a groom, a set chosen to match the bride’s jewellery tone is a subtle, thoughtful link between the two outfits.
Double-Breasted Tuxedos
A double-breasted dinner jacket has a strong, architectural presence and usually peak lapels. Because it is worn fastened, its overlapping front already covers the waistband, so no cummerbund or waistcoat is needed. It suits taller and slimmer builds especially well, but the front adds a layer of cloth, so choose a lighter weight for warm venues.
How a Tuxedo Should Fit
- Shoulders: clean, ending at the shoulder bone, with no dent below.
- Button point: the single button should sit at or just above the natural waist, with no pulling across it.
- Length: long enough to cover the seat, since tuxedo trousers have no belt to hide.
- Sleeves: showing about a quarter to half an inch of shirt cuff with the arms relaxed.
- Trousers: a slight break or none over patent shoes, sitting at the waist so the cummerbund or waistcoat covers the waistband.
Where Indian Grooms Bend the Rules
Indian receptions have made black tie their own, and some departures now look entirely deliberate:
- Ivory dinner jackets for warm evenings and a brighter presence on stage; see our ivory jackets with gold lapels.
- Tonal embroidery on the jacket body; see the navy sequin-embroidered tuxedo.
- Velvet jackets in black, midnight or deep jewel tones for winter receptions.
- Textured or embellished bow ties instead of plain silk.
The principle: change one element at a time and keep the rest classic. A velvet jacket with a traditional shirt, bow tie and shoes looks confident; a velvet jacket with a coloured shirt, long tie and brown shoes looks confused.
Black Tie in Bengaluru’s Climate
Bengaluru’s evenings are mild for most of the year and cool from roughly November to February, which makes the city unusually friendly to proper black tie. In winter, classic weights, velvet and evening waistcoats are comfortable. From March to May, and for outdoor lawns, choose a lighter wool or a wool-mohair blend, which has a crisp drape and subtle sheen, with a light lining and a cummerbund instead of a waistcoat.
Reading the Invitation
| Dress code | What it usually means |
| Black tie | A tuxedo or dinner jacket with bow tie; for Indian weddings, a formal bandhgala or sherwani is often equally welcome |
| Black tie optional | A tuxedo is preferred, but a dark, well-fitted suit with a tie is acceptable |
| Cocktail attire | A suit, with more room for colour, velvet and a statement jacket |
| Indian formal | A bandhgala, sherwani or embroidered kurta with a jacket |
When in doubt, the host’s family is always the best guide. For the groom, the question is less what is permitted and more what the family has planned for the evening.
Dressing the Groom’s Party in Black Tie
When brothers and close friends wear tuxedos too, small differences keep the groom distinct. He might wear midnight blue while they wear black, a shawl lapel while they wear peak lapels, or the only embellished lapel or bow tie in the group. Each tuxedo should still be cut for its wearer; identical off-the-rack sizing on different builds looks far less polished in group photographs than coordinated, individually fitted jackets.
Common Mistakes
- A business suit worn with a bow tie in place of a tuxedo.
- Belt loops and a belt on tuxedo trousers.
- Shirt visible between waistband and jacket button.
- Trousers too long, breaking heavily over patent shoes.
- A jacket that fits loosely; black tie relies on clean fit more than any other dress code.
Caring for a Tuxedo
Hang the jacket on a shaped hanger straight after the event, brush it, and let it air before storing it in a breathable cover. Satin and grosgrain lapels mark easily, so dab rather than rub any spills and leave stains to a dry cleaner experienced with evening wear. Store studs and cufflinks with the shirt so the full set is ready for the next occasion.
Black, Midnight or Ivory?
| Colour | Character | Best for |
| Black | The classic, most formal choice | Hotel and banquet receptions, black-tie galas |
| Midnight blue | Looks deep and rich under warm light, photographs with more detail than black | Grooms who want a subtle distinction from guests |
| Ivory or white | The warm-weather dinner jacket, bright on a dark stage | Summer receptions, outdoor evenings, celebrations |
With an ivory jacket, the trousers, bow tie and shoes stay black, which keeps the look firmly within evening dress.
What the Groom’s Father Should Wear
A father of the groom in black tie usually looks best in the most classic version: a black or midnight tuxedo with a peak or shawl lapel, a plain white shirt, a black silk bow tie and polished shoes. Leave the embellished lapels, velvet and statement bow ties to the groom. If the family prefers Indian dress, a well-cut bandhgala in a dark suiting cloth is an equally formal alternative.
Owning Versus Renting
A rented tuxedo solves a single evening, but it is cut for an average build and has been worn and cleaned many times. A tuxedo made for you fits from the first wearing, and in a dark, classic cloth it will serve for anniversaries, galas and other people’s weddings for years. If you expect even two or three black-tie occasions in the coming years, owning one is usually the better value.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a black-tie dress code mean for men?
A tuxedo, also called a dinner jacket: a black or midnight blue jacket with silk-faced lapels, matching trousers with a silk stripe, a white dress shirt with a turndown collar, a black silk bow tie, a cummerbund or waistcoat, and black formal shoes.
Which lapel is correct on a tuxedo?
Peak lapels and shawl lapels are both traditional for a tuxedo. Notch lapels, common on business suits, are considered less formal for black tie, although many modern tuxedos use them.
Should I wear a cummerbund or a waistcoat with a tuxedo?
Either is correct; both cover the trouser waistband so no shirt shows between trousers and jacket. A cummerbund is cooler and suits warm evenings, and is worn with the pleats facing up. A low-cut evening waistcoat is more formal and warmer, better for cool winter receptions.
Is midnight blue acceptable for black tie?
Yes. Midnight blue has been an accepted alternative to black for decades, and it is often said to look even darker and richer than black under artificial light.
What shoes go with a tuxedo?
Black patent leather oxfords or highly polished plain black oxfords are the standard. Velvet evening slippers are a stylish option for less formal events. Brown shoes, brogues and loafers with visible decoration do not belong with black tie.
