The Reception Question

The wedding ceremony usually settles its own dress code. The reception does not. It is an evening celebration, often in a hotel or banquet hall, with a long stage line and the largest guest list of the wedding. Grooms increasingly weigh a sharp tuxedo against a regal sherwani, and families often have strong views on both. There is no single right answer, but there is a right answer for your wedding.

A Short History of Both

Both garments are younger than many people assume. According to the history of the sherwani, it first appeared in Lucknow in the 1820s as the European-influenced court dress of northern Indian nobility, developing from the angarkha and gaining buttons down the front following European fashion, before being adopted across the subcontinent. The tuxedo is only a little younger. As the history of black tie records, the earliest tailless evening jacket was a midnight blue smoking jacket made in 1865 by Henry Poole and Co. for the future Edward VII, and the American name came from Tuxedo Park, New York, where young members wore tailless coats to the club’s Autumn Ball in October 1886. Both, in other words, began as more comfortable alternatives to heavier formal dress.

What Each Says

A tuxedo says modern and polished. It creates a clear contrast with the traditional ceremony, suits Western-style receptions and couples who want a cocktail-party mood, and sits naturally beside a bride in a gown. A sherwani says regal and rooted. It keeps the reception within Indian tradition, suits families who want continuity with the ceremony, and sits naturally beside a lehenga.

What the Bride Is Wearing Changes Everything

The reception outfit is photographed beside the bride more than any other, so her outfit should guide the choice. A gown or a sleek contemporary lehenga sits naturally beside a tuxedo or dinner jacket. A heavily embroidered lehenga or a silk saree pairs more naturally with a sherwani, bandhgala or embroidered jacket. When the bride’s outfit is very ornate, a quieter groom’s outfit, such as a plain tuxedo or a tonal bandhgala, lets her look lead without the groom disappearing.

The Middle Ground

Regional Preferences

Preferences vary across the south. In Hyderabad, the long sherwani has deep roots and remains a popular reception choice. In Chennai and Bengaluru, hotel receptions have embraced tuxedos, dinner jackets and suits, often in lighter cloths. Telugu and Kerala receptions have also moved strongly towards tailoring after traditional ceremonies. See our guides to Telugu groom dress, Kerala groom dress and wedding suit trends for Chennai and Bengaluru.

The Two-Outfit Reception

Some grooms wear a sherwani or bandhgala for the family welcome and stage line, then change into a tuxedo for dinner and dancing. It works well if the change is scheduled, the photographer knows, and the two outfits are clearly different in colour and silhouette.

Climate Considerations

For warm months and outdoor receptions, a lightweight tuxedo is usually more comfortable than an embroidered sherwani. In cool evenings, such as Bengaluru’s between roughly November and February, a velvet sherwani or bandhgala becomes very comfortable. See our reception outfits.

Wear-Again Value

Consider life after the wedding. A well-cut tuxedo or dinner jacket returns for galas, New Year parties and other weddings. A bandhgala works for festivals and formal family occasions. A heavily embroidered sherwani is harder to wear again, though a more restrained one can return for family weddings. If you want the wedding wardrobe to keep working, lean towards the tuxedo or bandhgala for the reception and let the ceremony outfit carry the embroidery.

Photographs and Stage Lighting

Tell your photographer what you will wear. A dark tuxedo needs good fill light to keep detail in the fabric, while an ivory or gold sherwani glows under warm stage lighting. Ask the décor team about the stage backdrop colour, too: an outfit that closely matches the backdrop can make the groom disappear into it in wide shots.

Fit Matters More Than the Choice

A well-fitted tuxedo and a well-fitted sherwani both look right. A poorly fitted version of either does not. For a tuxedo, the shoulders, collar and trouser length decide the result; for a sherwani, the collar, closure and length. Whichever you choose, allow time for a trial fitting before the reception, and bring the shoes you will wear.

A Quick Decision Checklist

  1. What is the bride wearing?
  2. What mood does the family want: traditional or contemporary?
  3. What is the venue, and how warm will it be?
  4. How different should it look from the ceremony outfit?
  5. Do you want to wear it again?
  6. How much time is left before the wedding?

Comfort Through a Long Stage Line

Reception stage lines can last hours, with constant standing, bending to greet elders and raising arms for hugs and photographs. A tuxedo in lightweight wool with a half lining is usually the cooler choice; a sherwani needs a breathable lining and restrained embroidery on the sleeves, where heavy work rubs and catches. Whichever you wear, check at the fitting that you can raise your arms without the garment lifting, and break in the shoes beforehand.

Budgeting for the Reception Outfit

The reception outfit appears in more photographs than almost any other, so it deserves a meaningful share of the budget. A tuxedo’s cost is driven mainly by cloth and construction, while a sherwani’s is driven mainly by embroidery. If the ceremony outfit already carries heavy embroidery, a well-cut tuxedo or bandhgala for the reception often gives more visual contrast for less.

Planning Timeline

A bespoke tuxedo and an embroidered sherwani typically take one to six weeks depending on the design, plus time for fittings. Decide the reception outfit alongside the ceremony outfit rather than after it, so colours and embroidery are planned together, and schedule the trial fitting at least two weeks before the reception.

What the Groom’s Father and Brothers Wear

The groom’s choice sets the tone for his family. If he wears a tuxedo, fathers look best in a classic dark suit or dinner jacket and brothers in coordinated suits or dinner jackets with a small point of difference, such as the bow tie. If he wears a sherwani, the family usually moves to bandhgalas or restrained sherwanis in related colours. In either case, the groom should remain the most distinctive figure in family photographs.

Talk to the Family Early

The reception outfit is where family expectations and personal style most often meet. Decide early, share the plan with the bride and both families, and design the outfit alongside hers. For the season’s directions, read our wedding suit trends, or book a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is more formal, a tuxedo or a sherwani?

Both are the most formal options in their traditions. A tuxedo is Western evening formalwear; a sherwani is Indian ceremonial formalwear. At an Indian reception, either is appropriate; the choice is about the mood the family wants rather than one being more formal.

Which looks better in reception photographs?

A sherwani gives a regal, traditional image and suits a bride in a lehenga. A tuxedo gives a sharp, modern silhouette and suits a bride in a gown. Tonal embroidery or an ivory dinner jacket bridges the two.

Is a tuxedo or a sherwani more expensive?

At Chirag Parmar Signatures, bespoke tuxedos range from ₹15,000 to ₹3,00,000+ and bespoke sherwanis from ₹20,000 to ₹3,00,000+. Embroidery is the biggest driver of sherwani prices.

Can I wear both at the reception?

Some grooms change mid-evening, for example a sherwani for the family welcome and a tuxedo for the party. It works well if the change is planned into the schedule and the outfits are clearly different.

What is a good middle ground between a tuxedo and a sherwani?

A bandhgala or Jodhpuri suit, an embroidered dinner jacket, or a structured Indo-Western long jacket. Each combines Indian character with a tailored line.
