Why Summer Muhurthams Are Hard on Grooms
Many muhurtham times fall in the early morning, but in March, April and May even morning heat builds quickly. Add stage and photography lights, a crowded mandap, long periods of sitting, and the warmth of the sacred fire during rituals, and a groom in heavy silk can be uncomfortable within the first hour. The ceremony calls for traditional attire, so the answer is not to abandon silk but to choose it, and everything around it, with heat in mind.
Choosing Fabric for Heat
- Lighter-weight pure silk: keeps the ceremonial sheen and zari border while breathing better than heavy silk.
- Silk-cotton: softer and cooler, with a gentle lustre that suits kurtas and many rituals.
- Linen-silk: very breathable for kurtas worn outside the core rituals.
- Avoid: heavy brocade, velvet and dense synthetic silks, which trap heat.

How Hot South Indian Summers Get
The need for lighter fabrics varies by city. In Chennai, according to its climate records, the hottest time of year runs from April to June, with average temperatures of about 35 to 40 °C and high humidity. Mysuru, at around 770 metres, is milder, but its climate records still put its warmest season between March and May. Coimbatore has a hot semi-arid climate, and inland Hyderabad has fierce summer heat. A lightweight silk that is comfortable in a Mysuru morning can feel heavy in a Chennai afternoon, so choose fabric for the specific city and time of day.
Construction That Keeps You Cool
- Unlined or cotton-lined kurtas instead of synthetic linings.
- A slightly easier cut through the chest and back so air can move.
- Lighter angavastram in a fine silk or silk-cotton.
- Embroidery concentrated at the collar, placket and cuffs, rather than dense work across the body that adds weight.
Colours
Ivory, cream, pale gold and soft pastels reflect heat and look fresh in morning light. They are also the traditional muhurtham palette, so there is no conflict between comfort and custom. Deep colours absorb more heat and show sweat more readily.
Choosing the Veshti or Panche for Summer
For the lower garment, weight matters as much as fibre. A lighter pure silk or a silk-cotton veshti or panche breathes noticeably better than a heavy silk with a broad, dense zari border, since zari adds both weight and warmth. A narrower border keeps the traditional look while lightening the cloth. Ready-stitched versions with a secure waist also help, because they reduce the bulk of extra folds at the waist.
Under-Layers
A fine, sleeveless cotton vest under the kurta absorbs sweat and protects silk from marks. Choose one that does not show at the neckline or through lighter fabrics, and let deodorant dry completely before dressing so it does not mark the silk.
Around the Sacred Fire
During rituals near the fire, keep the angavastram, stole and any loose ends of the dhoti secured and away from the flame. A priest or family member can help pin fabric in place. Synthetic fabrics are best avoided near an open flame.
Timing and Planning the Day
- Photographs: schedule portraits in the earliest, softest light, before the heat builds.
- Outfit change: plan a change into a lighter outfit straight after the core rituals.
- Breaks: agree with the priest and family where short pauses are possible.
- Hydration: keep water within reach and drink regularly.
Recognising Heat Stress
Long rituals in heat can affect anyone. Signs that the groom, or an elderly relative, needs a break include dizziness, headache, nausea, very heavy sweating or unusual tiredness. Move to shade or an air-conditioned room, loosen the upper layer, sip water, and rest until symptoms ease. If symptoms are severe or do not improve, seek medical help. Agreeing in advance with the priest when short pauses are possible makes it easier to act quickly.
A Summer Muhurtham Kit
- Handkerchiefs and blotting paper
- Safety pins to secure the angavastram
- A small hand fan
- A spare cotton vest
- Water and oral rehydration salts
Working Around a Fixed Muhurtham Time
The muhurtham itself is set by the family priest and rarely moves, so plan comfort around it rather than against it. Ask the decorators to shade the mandap and guest seating, and to position coolers or fans towards the seating area rather than near the sacred fire, where moving air is unsafe. Schedule portraits for before the ceremony or in shaded areas afterwards, and keep any rituals that can happen indoors in the coolest available space.
Month by Month in South Indian Summer
| Month | Conditions | Fabric advice |
| March | Warming, usually still bearable in the morning | Lighter silk; cotton-lined kurtas |
| April | Hot across most of the region | Lightest silks, silk-cotton, unlined kurtas |
| May | Typically the hottest | Lightest options; plan an early change |
Coastal cities add humidity, and inland cities such as Hyderabad can be especially hot, so adjust for your venue.
Before You Dress
- Sleep well and drink plenty of water the day before; heat is harder to manage when tired or dehydrated.
- Eat a light breakfast; heavy food makes the heat feel worse.
- Apply sunscreen and skincare early and let them absorb, so they do not mark a silk collar or angavastram.
- Spray perfume on the skin before dressing rather than on silk, which can stain.
- Keep hair products away from the angavastram and turban.
Keeping Guests and Family Comfortable
A comfortable groom is only part of a good summer muhurtham. Shaded seating, water stations and fans for guests, a cool room for elderly relatives, and a shorter programme of photographs in the heat all help the day run smoothly. Share the plan for a quick outfit change with the family, so the groom can move into lighter clothes as soon as the rituals allow.
Photography in Summer Light
Harsh midday sun flattens silk and throws strong shadows. Early-morning light before the muhurtham is softer and cooler, and shaded areas such as verandas or the covered edges of a venue give even light later in the day. Ivory and cream silks photograph beautifully in soft light, and a quick blot with blotting paper before each set of portraits keeps faces fresh.
After the Ceremony
Once the core rituals are complete, a lighter silk-cotton kurta or linen-silk set keeps the groom comfortable for lunch and greetings, while still looking festive in photographs. For the full wedding sequence, read the complete groom wear guide for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Caring for Silk After a Hot Day
Sweat and heat are hard on silk. Hang the kurta, veshti and angavastram to air as soon as you change, rather than folding them damp into a bag. Have them dry cleaned by a specialist within a few days, point out any perspiration marks, and store them in soft cotton or muslin once clean, away from damp and direct sunlight.
Colours and Zari Under Mandap Lights
Mandap lighting is warm and often bright, and in summer it adds to the heat. Ivory, cream and pale gold silks reflect light and stay cooler, and they glow softly in photographs without looking washed out. Heavy, wide zari borders catch light beautifully but add weight; a medium border with fine zari gives the same ceremonial sparkle with less bulk. Match the zari tone to the bride’s saree so the two look coordinated under the same lights.
A Summer Muhurtham Day at a Glance
| Time | What to do |
| Night before | Lay out the outfit, pins and kit; drink plenty of water |
| Early morning | Dress in a cool room; portraits in soft light |
| Muhurtham | Secure the angavastram; water within reach during pauses |
| After the rituals | Change into a lighter silk-cotton or linen-silk outfit |
| Afternoon | Rest in shade or air-conditioning; hang the ceremony silks to air |
For the Groom’s Father and Brothers
The groom’s family often stands and moves through the rituals as much as the groom. Lighter silk or silk-cotton veshtis and shirts, unlined kurtas and narrower zari borders keep them comfortable, and matching colours with the groom’s palette keeps family photographs coordinated. Elderly relatives should be seated in the coolest shaded spot with water nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the lightest fabric for a summer muhurtham?
Lighter-weight pure silks and silk-cotton blends keep the ceremonial look while breathing better than heavy silk or brocade. For kurtas worn outside the core rituals, fine cotton or linen-silk with a zari border is cooler still.
Can a groom wear linen for the muhurtham?
The core rituals traditionally call for silk, so check with the family and priest. Linen-silk or cotton-silk works well for kurtas and for functions around the ceremony where tradition allows more flexibility.
Should a summer muhurtham kurta be lined?
Ideally unlined or lined with light cotton. Heavy or synthetic linings trap heat under mandap lights and near the sacred fire. Sheer fabrics may need a light cotton lining for modesty.
How can I avoid sweat marks on a silk outfit?
Wear a fine cotton vest underneath to absorb sweat, let deodorant dry fully before dressing, blot rather than wipe the face and neck, and keep a handkerchief ready. Ivory and cream silks show sweat less than mid-tones.
