Silk, Ritual and Region

Across South India the muhurtham, the sacred moment of the wedding, calls for traditional silk rather than tailoring. Yet each state has its own names, drapes and details, and families within each state have their own customs. This guide sets out the usual attire in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala, how the pieces are worn, and how to make them comfortable through a long ceremony. Always confirm specifics with the family and the priest officiating.

The Muhurtham in Context

The muhurtham is the auspicious time, set by the family priest, at which the central rituals of the wedding take place. Depending on the tradition, these include rituals such as Kanyadanam, the tying of the mangalya or thali, and Saptapadi, the seven steps. Because the groom sits, stands and walks around the sacred fire many times, the attire has to be both correct and practical. For the full sequence of functions in each tradition, see our guides to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu weddings, Telugu groom dress and Kerala groom dress.

Why Silk for the Ceremony

Pure silk is the traditional fabric for auspicious occasions. Practically, it drapes cleanly through long periods of sitting, holds a crisp fold, carries zari borders beautifully, and has a soft sheen under mandap lighting. Cream, ivory and gold are the classic colours, with borders in gold, red, green or maroon.

Kanchipuram Silk and the Groom’s Silks

Many South Indian brides wear a Kanchipuram silk saree for the muhurtham, and understanding it helps the groom coordinate. As the history of the Kanchipuram silk sari describes, it is woven in the Kanchipuram region of Tamil Nadu from pure mulberry silk and zari, and was recognised as a Geographical Indication in 2005–2006. In a genuine Kanchipuram saree, the body and the wide contrast border are woven separately and then interlocked, a technique known as korvai, so strongly that the border will not detach even if the saree tears. Those wide, contrasting borders, often with temple motifs, are the best place to find the colour and zari tone for the groom’s veshti border and angavastram.

Karnataka: Pattu Panche and Shalya

The Kannada groom traditionally wears pattu panche, a silk dhoti, with a shalya or angavastra draped over the shoulder. Many grooms also wear the Mysore peta, the regional turban. For receiving guests or parts of the day outside the core rituals, a silk kurta or jubba is common. See our Nischitartham outfits for the engagement that precedes it.

Tamil Nadu: Pattu Veshti and Angavastram

The Tamil groom traditionally wears a pattu veshti with a zari border and an angavastram. In many Tamil Brahmin weddings the veshti is worn in the panchakacham style, a particular way of draping and tucking it for the rituals. The groom’s silk is usually coordinated in tone with the bride’s Kanjeevaram saree. See Nischayathartham outfits.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: Pattu Pancha and Kanduva

Telugu grooms traditionally wear a pattu pancha, the silk dhoti, with a kanduva or uttariyam, the upper cloth. Silk kurtas and sherwanis are popular for the other functions of the day. See our guide for Hyderabad grooms.

Kerala: Kasavu Mundu

In many Kerala Hindu weddings, the groom wears a kasavu mundu, an off-white or cream dhoti with a gold border, often with a matching upper cloth or a silk shirt. Kerala weddings are often simpler and quicker than elsewhere in the south, and the attire reflects that restraint. See our guide for Kochi grooms.

Adding a Silk Kurta

Many grooms pair the traditional dhoti with a hand-embroidered silk kurta for receiving guests and for photographs outside the core rituals. the atelier’s own portfolio includes a traditional cream silk kurta and dhoti with a gold zari border, photographed for the muhurtham, which shows how naturally the two work together. See Muhurtham dress for grooms and designer kurtas.

Choosing Border Width and Zari

Border width signals formality. A narrow zari border looks restrained and suits a smaller ceremony, while a broad border with woven motifs looks grander and photographs well from across a hall. Zari itself varies: traditional real zari uses silver wire, sometimes gilded, around a silk core; tested zari uses copper wire plated with silver or gold; and imitation zari uses metallised film. All can look beautiful, but they differ in weight, glow and how they age. Match the zari’s tone to the bride’s saree and jewellery, and choose the angavastram border to match the veshti.

Coordinating With the Bride

Match tone rather than colour. If the bride’s saree has a gold zari border, echo that gold in the groom’s border and angavastram. Ivory and cream silks sit well beside almost any bridal colour, which is one reason they have endured.

Practical Comfort

What the Groom’s Family Wears

The groom’s father and brothers usually wear silk veshtis, panches or panchas with silk shirts or kurtas, often with narrower borders than the groom’s so he stands out. Some families coordinate the colour of the men’s angavastrams or shirts. Keeping the groom’s silk the richest in the group ensures he is the focal point in family photographs.

Summer and Monsoon Muhurthams

In the hot months, choose a lighter silk or silk-cotton, keep the upper layer minimal where custom allows, and have water at hand during breaks in the rituals. In the monsoon, protect silk from rain on the way to the venue, carry the ceremony clothes in a breathable bag, and keep a spare angavastram dry in case of a sudden shower.

Ceremony Photography Tips

The muhurtham produces some of the most treasured photographs of the wedding, often under warm mandap lighting and close to the sacred fire. Keep the angavastram neatly draped between rituals, since it is visible in almost every frame. Ask the photographer to capture a few full-length portraits before the rituals begin, while the silk is crisp and the drape is fresh. Matching the zari tone to the bride’s saree pays off here, because the two outfits appear side by side in most images.

A Muhurtham Day Checklist

Caring for Silk Ceremony Wear

Silk dhotis, angavastrams and kurtas are often kept for years and worn again at family ceremonies, so care matters. Have them cleaned by a dry cleaner experienced with silk and zari, store them wrapped in muslin or soft cotton rather than plastic, and refold them along different lines every few months so permanent creases do not form in the silk or crack the zari. Keep them away from damp, which tarnishes metallic borders, and air them occasionally in shade rather than direct sunlight.

Planning the Ceremony Attire

Hand-embroidered silk kurtas take one to six weeks depending on density, so plan them alongside the rest of the wardrobe. For the full sequence of functions, read the complete groom wear guide for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, or book a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pattu panche?

Pattu panche is the Kannada term for a silk dhoti: pattu means silk and panche means dhoti. It is the traditional muhurtham attire for grooms in Karnataka, usually in ivory, cream or gold with a zari border, worn with a shalya or angavastra.

What does a Kerala groom wear for the wedding?

Traditionally a kasavu mundu, an off-white or cream dhoti with a gold border, often with a matching upper cloth or a silk shirt. Attire varies between communities, so the family’s customs decide the final look.

What does a Telugu groom wear for the muhurtham?

Traditionally a silk pancha with a kanduva or uttariyam, the upper cloth, often in cream or gold. Many Telugu grooms also wear a silk kurta or sherwani for other parts of the wedding day.

How do I keep a dhoti secure through a long ceremony?

Practise tying it before the wedding, ask someone experienced to tie it on the day, and consider a thin belt or waist tie underneath. Ready-to-wear stitched dhotis with an elastic or hook waist are now widely available and hold securely.

Can a groom wear a silk kurta with a dhoti for the muhurtham?

In many families, yes, especially for receiving guests and for parts of the day outside the core rituals. Some rituals traditionally call for only the dhoti and angavastram, so check with the family and priest.
