What a Nehru Jacket Is
In India today, a Nehru jacket usually means a sleeveless, hip-length jacket with a mandarin collar, buttoned down the front and worn over a kurta or shirt. It is also called a bandi or, more recently, a Modi jacket. It takes its name from the closed-collar jackets associated with Jawaharlal Nehru, though his own garments were typically long, sleeved achkan-style coats. Over the decades the sleeveless version has become one of the most versatile pieces in Indian menswear.
Its appeal is simple: it adds structure and polish to a kurta without the heat of a full jacket, and it moves easily from a haldi or pooja to a festive dinner or a smart-casual office day.
From Achkan to Nehru Jacket to Modi Jacket
The name has a more complicated history than the garment. As the history of the Nehru jacket records, the jacket known internationally by that name is a hip-length tailored coat with a mandarin collar, modelled on the longer achkan and sherwani, and it was first marketed as the Nehru jacket in Europe and America in the mid-1960s. It became fashionable in the late 1960s, helped by celebrities including the Beatles, and in 2012 Time magazine listed it among its top ten political fashion statements. Nehru himself, the same account notes, never wore the shortened versions named after him, preferring traditional achkan-style coats. The sleeveless bundi or sadri that most Indians now call a Nehru jacket is older than either name attached to it, a point ThePrint’s account of the Modi vest makes clearly.

Getting the Fit Right
- Shoulders: the jacket should sit on your shoulders without extending past them. Too wide and the armholes gape.
- Armholes: high enough to look neat, generous enough that they do not cut into the arm when you move.
- Chest and waist: close to the body with a gentle shape, but it should button without pulling.
- Length: around the hip, just covering the waistband. Over a kurta, it must be clearly shorter than the kurta.
- Collar: a low mandarin collar that sits cleanly against the neck without pressing.
Buttons and Details
Small details change a Nehru jacket’s character more than its colour. Self-covered or fabric buttons look quiet and formal; metal, horn or enamel buttons turn the jacket into a statement. A welt chest pocket makes room for a pocket square, which suits weddings and dinners, while patch pockets look more relaxed. Piping along the collar and front edge, a shade darker or lighter than the jacket, adds definition without embroidery. On festive jackets, keep embroidery to the collar, placket or pockets so the kurta underneath still has its moment.
Nehru Jackets for Grooms and for Guests
For the groom, a Nehru jacket works best at the lighter functions, such as the Roka, haldi or mehendi, in a richer fabric with more detail. For the groom’s brothers, friends and wedding guests, it is often the ideal middle ground: smarter than a plain kurta, yet clearly a step below the groom’s sherwani or bandhgala. Dressing the family in jackets of the same fabric in different colours is a simple way to look unified in photographs.
Nehru Jacket, Bandi, Modi Jacket or Waistcoat?
| Garment | Collar | Sleeves | Worn |
| Nehru jacket (as used in India) or bandi | Mandarin | None | As an outer layer over a kurta or shirt |
| Modi jacket | Mandarin, often slightly shorter cut | None | Over a kurta, often in bright matka or khadi silk |
| Western waistcoat | V-neck, no collar | None | Under a suit jacket |
| Bandhgala | Mandarin, closed at the throat | Full | As a formal jacket with trousers |
For how these relate to the sherwani and achkan, see our guide to closed-neck garment differences.
Fabrics for Every Season
| Season or occasion | Fabric | Character |
| Summer daytime | Linen, khadi, cotton | Breathable, matte, relaxed |
| Festive and weddings | Raw silk, jacquard, brocade | Rich texture, subtle sheen |
| Evening | Velvet, silk with embroidery | Luxurious, dramatic |
| Winter | Wool, tweed, wool-silk | Warm, structured |
Three Ways to Layer It
Over a kurta
The classic pairing. Choose a kurta that falls to the knee or just above, with churidar, straight pants or dhoti pants. The jacket adds shape and makes a simple kurta formal enough for weddings and festivals.
Over a shirt and trousers
A Nehru jacket over a plain shirt with tailored trousers gives a sharp, Indian-inflected alternative to a blazer for office events and dinners. Button the shirt to the top and leave out the tie.
Over a T-shirt
For casual gatherings, a linen or khadi Nehru jacket over a plain crew-neck T-shirt with chinos or dark jeans is relaxed but still put together.
Embroidery and Texture Ideas
- Tonal thread work at the collar and front edge, for a refined festive jacket.
- Floral embroidery in soft colours, as on a blush bandi for a mehendi.
- Jacquard or brocade with a woven pattern, which needs no embroidery at all.
- Khadi or linen with contrast piping, for a crisp daytime look.
- Hand-painted motifs on silk or linen, for a statement jacket at a relaxed function.
Nehru Jackets for Different Builds
- Broader builds: a darker jacket over a lighter kurta slims the torso; avoid bulky fabrics and horizontal patterns.
- Slim builds: textured cloths such as jacquard, tweed or raw silk add welcome presence.
- Shorter men: a slightly shorter jacket and a tonal kurta and jacket combination lengthen the figure.
- Taller men: can carry longer jackets and bolder contrast between layers.
Colour Pairings
- Ivory kurta: almost any jacket colour works; try navy, emerald, maroon or mustard.
- Pastel kurta: a jacket in a deeper shade of the same family, such as sage kurta with olive jacket.
- Dark kurta: a textured jacket in a lighter or metallic tone for contrast.
- Tonal look: kurta and jacket in the same colour with different textures looks refined and modern.
Nehru Jackets at Work
In smart-casual offices, a Nehru jacket in navy, grey or charcoal over a white or pale blue shirt with tailored trousers is a distinctive alternative to a blazer. Choose a matte cloth such as wool, linen or khadi, keep buttons understated, and leave the festive silks and embroidery for evenings and celebrations.
Where It Works Best
A Nehru jacket is a natural fit for a Roka ceremony, haldi and mehendi, Diwali and poojas, and for wedding guests who want something smarter than a plain kurta. For the main ceremony or a formal reception, most grooms move up to a sherwani, bandhgala or tuxedo.
Mistakes to Avoid
- A jacket as long as the kurta, which blurs the layers.
- Pattern on pattern: a printed kurta with a heavily printed jacket.
- A jacket so tight it pulls at the buttons when seated.
- Shiny festive brocade with jeans; save texture-rich casual cloths for casual looks.
Caring for a Nehru Jacket
Hang it on a shaped hanger so the collar and shoulders keep their line, brush wool and khadi after wearing, and dry clean silk and embroidered jackets rather than washing them. Steam from the inside, and store festive jackets in breathable cotton covers away from damp.
Building a Small Collection
Three Nehru jackets cover most of the year: a navy or charcoal wool jacket for work and dinners, an ivory or gold silk jacket for poojas and weddings, and a textured jewel-toned jacket for festivals and evening functions. Each works over several kurtas and shirts, which makes them some of the most versatile pieces in an Indian wardrobe.
Nehru Jackets at Weddings
At a wedding, the Nehru jacket does its best work in the functions around the ceremony. For the groom, a richer jacket in silk or jacquard over a coordinated kurta suits the Roka, haldi, mehendi and a daytime engagement. For the groom’s brothers, cousins and friends, matching jackets in one fabric and different colours make group photographs look planned. For guests, a Nehru jacket over a silk kurta is smart enough for almost any Indian wedding function without competing with the groom’s sherwani or bandhgala.
Nehru Jackets in Warm Weather
Because it has no sleeves, a Nehru jacket is one of the most comfortable ways to look dressed in heat. Choose an unlined or lightly lined jacket in linen, khadi, cotton or a light raw silk, keep it slightly easier through the chest so air can move, and pair it with a breathable cotton or linen kurta. For an outdoor daytime function, a pale jacket over a white kurta stays cooler than a dark, heavily embroidered one, and it photographs brightly in natural light.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Nehru jacket and a bandhgala?
A Nehru jacket, as the term is used in India today, is a sleeveless, hip-length jacket with a mandarin collar, worn over a kurta or shirt. A bandhgala is a full-sleeved, closed-neck jacket, usually worn with trousers as a formal suit.
Is a Modi jacket the same as a Nehru jacket?
They are very close. “Modi jacket” is the popular name for a sleeveless, hip-length jacket with a mandarin collar that became widely associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In practice, most people use Nehru jacket, bandi and Modi jacket for similar sleeveless styles.
Can I wear a Nehru jacket with a shirt and jeans?
Yes. A Nehru jacket over a plain shirt or a crew-neck T-shirt with dark jeans or chinos is a smart-casual look that works for festive gatherings and dinners. Choose a textured cloth such as linen, khadi or raw silk rather than a shiny festive fabric.
How long should a Nehru jacket be?
It should end around the hip, just covering the trouser waistband. Worn over a kurta, it must be noticeably shorter than the kurta so the layers read clearly.
How much does a kurta with a Nehru jacket cost at CPS?
At Chirag Parmar Signatures, bespoke silk, cotton and linen kurtas paired with handcrafted Bundi or Nehru jackets range from ₹5,500 to ₹25,000+.
