Why Summer Suits Fail
Most men who feel suffocated in a suit at a summer wedding are wearing the wrong cloth, not the wrong garment. A dense, heavy wool, a full lining and a stiff interlining trap heat against the body. The solution is not to abandon tailoring but to choose cloths and construction designed for heat. India’s hottest months, roughly March to May, and humid coastal cities make this especially important.
What Makes a Suit Cool
- Openness of the weave: the more air that can pass through, the cooler the suit.
- Yarn twist: tightly twisted yarns keep an open weave strong and crease resistant.
- Weight: lighter cloth helps, but too light and the suit loses its shape.
- Construction: less lining and lighter canvas make a larger difference than most people expect.

The Fabrics Compared
| Cloth | Breathability | Crease resistance | Formality | Best for |
| Tropical wool | Good | Good | High | Everyday summer suits |
| High-twist and fresco | Excellent | Excellent | High | Hot-weather weddings, travel |
| Solaro | Moderate | Good | Medium to high | Daytime events, statement suits |
| Wool-mohair blend | Good | Very good | Very high | Summer tuxedos, evening |
| Linen and linen blends | Excellent | Poor to fair | Low to medium | Beach, garden, destination |
| Seersucker and cotton | Very good | Fair | Low | Casual daytime events |
Understanding Cloth Weight
Suit cloth is described by weight, usually in grams per square metre (gsm), and sometimes in ounces per yard. For most Indian cities for most of the year, a light to mid-weight wool of roughly 220 to 260 gsm is the practical choice, and summer cloths often sit at the lighter end of that range. Weight alone does not decide comfort, though: a slightly heavier high-twist cloth with an open weave can feel cooler than a lighter, dense one, because the air passes through it. When choosing, hold the cloth up to the light as well as checking its weight.
Tropical Wool
Lightweight worsted wool in a plain, open weave. It looks like a normal business or wedding suit, keeps a clean line and breathes far better than heavier twills. For most summer weddings, it is the safe, elegant default.
High-Twist Wool and Fresco
High-twist cloths use tightly twisted yarns woven with visible gaps between them, so air moves through the suit. The twist gives the cloth a springy, crisp handle that sheds creases. Fresco, patented by Martin Sons in 1907 and made today by Hardy Minnis, is the best known; other mills offer their own versions, such as Fox Air and Harrisons’ Tropical Air, each with a slightly different feel. For heat and travel, these are the best tailoring cloths available.
Solaro
Solaro has one of the most interesting stories in menswear. It was developed in 1907 by Louis Westenra Sambon, then working on tropical medicine, as a cloth meant to protect wearers from the sun. The weave combines brick red and olive green yarns, which gives the surface an iridescent, shot look, usually in a herringbone. The sun protection never worked, but the cloth became a much-loved warm-weather suiting. It suits daytime events and grooms who want a suit with character. Smith Woollens, now part of Harrisons, still produces it.
Wool-Mohair Blends
Mohair adds crispness, a subtle sheen and excellent crease recovery. Wool-mohair has long been a classic for summer dinner suits and tuxedos, because it stays sharp through a warm evening and catches light beautifully. See tuxedos.
Linen and Linen Blends
Linen is the most breathable suiting and the most relaxed. It creases readily, which looks right at beach, garden and destination weddings but less so at a formal evening reception. Linen-wool-silk blends offer a middle path, with linen’s texture and noticeably fewer creases.
Seersucker and Cotton
Seersucker’s puckered surface holds fabric away from the skin, and cotton suits feel fresh in the day. Both are casual, best kept for relaxed daytime events and pre-wedding gatherings rather than the main functions.
Summer Fabrics for Indian Wear
The same principles apply to Indian garments. For kurtas, bandhgalas and Indo-Western jackets in the hot months, raw silk and matka breathe better than heavy brocade, silk-linen and cotton-silk blends are cool for daytime functions, and chanderi, a light silk-cotton weave, suits haldi and mehendi. For a summer sherwani, choose a lighter silk with embroidery concentrated at the collar and cuffs rather than a fully worked body, which adds both weight and heat.
Construction for Heat
- Half-lined or quarter-lined jackets in a breathable lining such as cupro.
- Half-canvas construction rather than a heavy full interlining.
- Softer shoulders with lighter padding.
- Trousers unlined or lined only to the knee.
Summer Wedding Outfits by Function
| Function | Outfit | Cloth |
| Daytime ceremony | Silk kurta or light sherwani | Light raw silk, silk-cotton |
| Garden or beach event | Linen suit or linen-blend jacket | Linen, linen-wool-silk |
| Evening reception | Tuxedo or dinner jacket | Wool-mohair, high-twist wool |
| Church or registry wedding | Two-piece suit | Tropical or high-twist wool |
| Pre-wedding party | Seersucker or cotton suit | Seersucker, cotton |
Staying Cool on the Day
- Keep the jacket off until photographs and formal moments.
- Choose a two-piece rather than a three-piece for outdoor daytime events.
- Wear a breathable cotton shirt in poplin or voile under the suit.
- Carry a handkerchief and schedule outdoor portraits for cooler hours.
Colours for Summer
Light and mid grey, stone, tan, pale blue and ivory reflect heat and look fresh in daylight. For evening, an ivory dinner jacket or a mid-blue suit keeps things cooler than black.
Summer Black Tie
A summer evening reception can still be black tie. The traditional warm-weather alternative is an ivory or white dinner jacket with black trousers, which reflects heat and stands out against dark stages. A wool-mohair blend keeps a black or midnight tuxedo crisp and cooler, and a cummerbund is lighter to wear than an evening waistcoat.
Caring for Summer Suits
Hang the suit to air after a warm day before putting it away, steam out creases rather than pressing, and dry clean sparingly. Linen responds well to steaming while slightly damp.
Where Summer Suits Go After the Wedding
A summer suit in tropical or high-twist wool is one of the most useful garments in a warm climate, returning for business meetings, travel and other people’s weddings. A linen suit becomes a relaxed jacket for weekends, and an ivory dinner jacket returns for every warm-weather celebration. Choosing a versatile colour, such as navy, mid-grey or stone, makes it far easier to wear again.
Shirts, Ties and Shoes for Summer Suits
A breathable suit is undermined by a heavy shirt. Choose two-ply cotton poplin, voile or a fine linen-cotton blend in white or pale blue. Silk or linen ties in lighter weights and softer colours suit daytime summer weddings, while knitted ties add texture without warmth. For shoes, unlined loafers and lighter leather oxfords in tan or brown suit light suits; save heavy black shoes for evening and darker cloths.
Summer Fabrics and Sweat Marks
Some colours and cloths show perspiration more than others. Mid-grey and some light blues mark visibly, while navy, stone and patterned cloths such as a fine check or herringbone hide it better. A thin cotton undershirt protects the shirt, and a half-lined jacket lets heat escape so less sweat builds up in the first place.
Travelling With a Summer Suit
High-twist cloths are among the best for travel, because their springy yarns recover from creasing overnight when hung. Linen will always crease in a suitcase, which is part of its character; steam it gently on arrival. Pack the jacket folded inside out along the shoulders, or carry it in a garment bag in the cabin.
A Summer Suit Checklist
- An open or high-twist weave in a light to mid-weight cloth.
- A half-lined or quarter-lined jacket with a breathable lining.
- Soft or lightly padded shoulders.
- A light or mid-tone colour for daytime; mohair blends or ivory for evening.
- A breathable shirt and lighter shoes to match.
Summer Suits for the Groom’s Party
When brothers and groomsmen wear suits at a summer wedding, the same principles apply to everyone, not just the groom. Agree a breathable cloth, such as tropical or high-twist wool or a linen blend, and a lighter colour family for the group, and ask for half-lined jackets throughout. The groom can then stand apart through colour, a finer cloth or a waistcoat, while everyone stays comfortable through a long outdoor function.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is high-twist wool?
Wool woven from yarns twisted more tightly than usual, typically in an open plain weave. The tight twist makes the yarn springy and strong, so the cloth resists creasing, while the open weave lets air pass through. Fresco, patented by Martin Sons in 1907 and still made by Hardy Minnis, is the best-known example.
What is Solaro fabric?
Solaro is a wool cloth woven from brick red and olive green yarns, which gives it a distinctive iridescent, shot appearance, often in a herringbone. It was developed in 1907 by Louis Westenra Sambon as a tropical cloth intended to protect against the sun. It never delivered that protection, but it became a classic warm-weather suiting. Smith Woollens, now part of Harrisons, still offers it.
Is a linen suit appropriate for a wedding?
Yes, for daytime, outdoor and destination weddings, especially in light colours. Linen creases, which looks relaxed rather than formal, so it suits beach and garden functions more than an evening reception. A linen-wool-silk blend creases less and looks slightly dressier.
What lining should a summer suit have?
As little as possible. A half-lined or quarter-lined jacket in a breathable lining, such as cupro, is far cooler than a fully lined one. Unlined trousers or trousers lined only to the knee also help.
Is mohair good for a summer suit?
Wool-mohair blends are a classic choice for warm evening wear. Mohair gives the cloth a crisp handle, a subtle sheen and good crease recovery, which is why it has long been popular for summer tuxedos and dinner suits.
