How to Read This Forecast
Fashion forecasts are usually built from runway images and guesswork. This one is grounded in finished commissions documented in our case studies between 2024 and 2026, and in broader shifts in how Indian weddings are planned. It does not predict precise percentages or crown a single colour of the year. It sets out the directions that are gaining ground, so you can decide which suit you and which will still look good in your album in ten years.
Colour Directions
Ivory and gold remains the anchor
For the wedding ceremony, ivory, cream and gold continue to lead because they photograph beautifully and sit comfortably beside almost any bridal colour. Our cream and gold wedding sherwani from 2025 is a good example of why this palette endures.
Muted, grown-up tonals
The bright pastels of recent years are softening into muted shades: lavender-grey, sage, taupe, champagne and dusty blue. The lavender brocade Indo-Western from April 2026 and the taupe chevron jacket from 2025 both show this shift towards tone-on-tone looks.
Midnight over black
For evening tailoring, midnight blue continues to gain on black because it looks richer under artificial light while remaining unmistakably formal.
Earthy festival colours
Rust, mustard, olive and terracotta are appearing more at haldi and daytime functions, often in raw silk and linen, as alternatives to the classic yellow.

Colour Directions by Function
| Function | Directions gaining ground |
| Haldi | Rust, mustard, olive and terracotta alongside classic yellow |
| Mehendi | Sage, mint and muted greens with floral detail |
| Sangeet | Tonal metallics, black with beadwork, deep jewel tones |
| Wedding ceremony | Ivory, cream and gold, with tonal embroidery |
| Reception | Midnight blue, ivory dinner jackets, bottle green |
For pairing any of these with the bride’s outfit, see our groom colour combination guide.
Silhouette Directions
- Longer open jackets over kurtas, giving presence without the formality of a full sherwani.
- Softer shoulders on Indo-Western pieces, for comfort through long evenings and dancing.
- Shawl lapels on evening jackets, smooth and photogenic, especially with embellishment.
- Closer-cut bandhgalas with a clean line, worn with slim trousers rather than loose churidars.
- Attached drapes replacing loose stoles, for movement without constant adjustment.
Silhouettes That Are Fading
- Very short, very tight jackets, which restrict movement through long functions and date quickly in photographs.
- Excessively long, heavy sherwanis worn to every function, replaced by lighter pieces for the events around the ceremony.
- All-over sequins on jacket and trousers, giving way to one embellished element.
- Loose, unstructured Indo-Western pieces that borrow the look of fusion wear without its tailoring.
Detail Directions
- Embellished lapels on plain jackets: one focal point instead of all-over decoration. See our ivory dinner jackets with gold lapels.
- Tonal embroidery: silver on navy, black on black, gold on ivory. See the navy sequin-embroidered tuxedo.
- Hand-painted pieces: florals and artwork on jackets for mehendi and daytime events, as an alternative to embroidery. See hand-painted outfits.
- Bead work: glass beads and crystals used in lines and geometric patterns.
Fabric Directions
Comfort is finally shaping choices. Grooms are choosing lighter, breathable cloths for daytime functions, textured silks such as raw silk and matka over high-shine synthetics, and lightweight or high-twist wools for evening tailoring. Velvet remains strong, but increasingly reserved for winter evenings and air-conditioned venues rather than worn year-round.
Fabric Directions in Detail
High-twist wool is moving from business suits into wedding tailoring. The best-known example, Fresco, was patented by Martin Sons and Company in 1907 and, as Huddersfield Fine Worsteds describes, is still made today; its tightly twisted yarns keep an open weave that lets air through. Alongside it, raw silk and matka are preferred over high-shine synthetic brocades for bandhgalas and Indo-Western jackets, silk-linen blends are appearing at daytime functions, and velvet is increasingly reserved for winter evenings. Our 2026 wedding suit trends explain how these cloths behave in Chennai and Bengaluru.
Wardrobe-Level Directions
Coordinated families
Brothers, fathers and close friends are increasingly dressed as a considered group, in coordinated colours or matching jackets cut individually, rather than each person choosing separately.
Outfits worth wearing again
More grooms want at least part of the wedding wardrobe to live on: a bandhgala for future festivals, a dinner jacket for galas, a kurta set for family occasions. That favours clean, well-cut pieces over one-off costumes.
Accessory Directions
- Tonal safas: turbans in a shade drawn from the jacket rather than a contrasting bright colour.
- Lighter malas: layered pearls and slimmer gold chains in place of single heavy pieces, as in the atelier’s pearl and emerald malas for mehendi.
- Statement bow ties: textured and embellished bow ties doing the work pocket squares used to do on dinner jackets.
- Brooches on bandhgalas: one considered brooch instead of a pocket square and lapel pin together.
- Tonal mojaris: footwear embroidered in the outfit’s own colours rather than generic gold.
Regional Directions
South Indian ceremonies remain firmly traditional, with silk veshtis, panches, panchas and mundus for the core rituals, while the functions around them have become the place for new ideas. Receptions across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala are increasingly tailored, and pre-wedding events such as the sangeet and mehendi, once rare in parts of the south, now invite Indo-Western looks. See our guides to Telugu groom dress, Kerala groom dress and the complete Karnataka and Tamil Nadu guide.
Rewear and Longevity
Grooms are thinking more about what happens to their outfits after the wedding. That favours bandhgalas in solid colours, dinner jackets in classic cloths, and kurta sets that suit festivals, rather than garments designed for a single photograph. Detachable embellishment, such as buttons or a stole, lets one piece work at both the wedding and future occasions.
What to Keep Timeless
| Function | Play it classic | Room to experiment |
| Wedding ceremony | Silhouette and colour | Embroidery motif |
| Reception | Fit and cut | Lapel detail, colour |
| Sangeet and cocktail | Fit | Everything else |
| Haldi and mehendi | Comfort | Colour, prints, hand-painting |
How to Try a Trend Safely
- Keep the ceremony outfit classic and experiment at the sangeet, cocktail or mehendi.
- Put the trend in one element: colour, a lapel or a drape, not all three.
- Choose trends that suit your build rather than following them for their own sake.
- Check the look in daylight and under warm evening light before committing.
Budgeting for Trend Pieces
Spend the most on pieces with lasting value, such as a well-cut reception jacket or ceremony sherwani, and less on the most trend-driven looks. An embellished lapel on a plain jacket often gives the effect of an embroidered jacket for a fraction of the artisan hours.
Trends for the Groom’s Family
Family dressing is moving from identical outfits towards coordinated palettes. Fathers in deeper or more muted versions of the groom’s colours, brothers sharing a fabric in different shades, and groomsmen in matching jackets cut individually all photograph well while letting each person look like himself. Keeping the groom the most detailed figure in the group remains the constant.
Colours Likely to Endure
Some colours age better in photographs than others. Ivory and gold for the ceremony, midnight blue and bottle green for evening, and muted tonals such as taupe, sage and champagne for daytime all have a long track record in wedding wear. Very bright neons and heavily saturated pastels tend to date faster, which is why they are best kept to a single function if you love them.
What Photographers Look For
Many of the most photogenic outfits share a few qualities: clear contrast in lightness with the bride’s outfit, texture that holds detail under flash, a clean silhouette that reads from a distance, and a single focal point near the face. Talking to your photographer about the palette and venues before you finalise outfits helps them plan lighting that flatters both.
A Checklist Before You Commit
- Does it suit the function’s time of day and venue?
- Does it sit well beside the bride’s outfit?
- Does it flatter your build and colouring?
- Will it be comfortable for the full length of the function?
- Will you still like it in the photographs in ten years?
Why Forecasts Should Be Read Loosely
No forecast can say exactly what will be popular in a given city in a given season, and families, communities and venues all shape what feels right. Treat these directions as a menu of ideas rather than rules. The most successful wedding wardrobes usually borrow one or two current ideas and build everything else on proportions, colours and fabrics that already suit the groom, the bride’s outfits and the setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will pastel groom outfits still be popular in 2027?
Soft, tonal colours look set to stay, particularly for daytime and pre-wedding functions, but the direction is shifting from sugary pastels towards more muted shades such as lavender-grey, sage, taupe and champagne that photograph well in both daylight and evening light.
Are embellished tuxedos a passing trend?
Heavy all-over embellishment may date quickly, but restrained versions are becoming part of the vocabulary: embellished lapels on plain jackets and tonal embroidery that reads as classic from a distance. Those are likely to age well.
Should my ceremony outfit follow trends?
Usually not. The ceremony outfit appears in the most important photographs, so a classic silhouette in timeless colours such as ivory and gold ages best. Take style risks at the sangeet or cocktail evening instead.
What fabrics are grooms moving towards?
Lighter, more breathable cloths and textured silks with a matte or soft sheen, rather than high-shine synthetics. Comfort through long functions is becoming as important as appearance.
