The Problem With Shirts in South India
A shirt sits closest to the skin, so it decides how comfortable you feel long before a jacket does. Chennai and Kochi are hot and humid for much of the year, Hyderabad has fierce summers, and even Bengaluru’s milder climate turns warm in the afternoon and in crowded rooms. A shirt that looks perfect in an air-conditioned showroom can be damp and clinging by lunch. The fabric, the weave and the fit all decide whether it keeps you cool.
What Makes a Fabric Feel Cool
- Air permeability: how easily air passes through the cloth. Open weaves beat dense ones.
- Moisture handling: how well the fibre absorbs sweat and how quickly it dries again.
- Contact with the skin: fabrics that stand slightly away from the body feel cooler than those that cling.
- Weight: lighter cloth traps less heat, but too light and it can look sheer or flimsy.

Linen
Linen is woven from flax. Its fibres are strong and slightly stiff, so a linen shirt stands a little away from the body and lets air circulate. It absorbs moisture well and dries quickly, which is why it feels fresh in humid heat. It also softens with every wash.
The trade-off is creasing. Flax has little natural elasticity, so linen holds every fold. On a well-cut shirt that looks relaxed and deliberate; on a poorly fitted one it looks untidy. Linen is at its best for daytime events, travel, haldi and mehendi functions, and weekends.
The science behind linen’s coolness
Linen is made from the bast fibres of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. According to the properties of linen, it feels cool to the touch because of its higher thermal conductivity, it dries faster than cotton, and it becomes stronger when wet. Its poor elasticity is the same property that makes it crease so easily. It is also one of the oldest textiles: the Tarkhan dress, dated to between 3482 and 3102 BC, is among the oldest woven garments known, and linen was widely used in ancient Egypt.
Cotton, Weave by Weave
Cotton is more varied than linen, because the weave changes how it behaves as much as the fibre does.
| Weave | Feel | Heat | Best for |
| Voile | Very light, soft, slightly sheer | Very cool | Hot days, kurta-shirts |
| Poplin | Smooth, crisp, light | Cool | Office and formal shirts |
| Seersucker | Puckered, textured | Cool | Casual summer shirts |
| Chambray | Soft, slightly textured | Moderate | Smart-casual |
| Twill | Diagonal, drapes well, resists creasing | Moderate to warm | Air-conditioned offices |
| Oxford | Textured basket weave, sturdy | Warm | Casual, cooler weather |
Fibre quality matters too. Long-staple cottons such as Egyptian and Giza varieties spin into finer, smoother yarns, and two-ply cloth, with two yarns twisted into each thread, is stronger and creases less.
Cotton’s Strengths
Cotton does not breathe quite as well as linen in humid heat, but it has real advantages. It is softer against the skin from the first wear, creases far less, takes and holds colour well, and is easier to wash and iron. Quality depends heavily on fibre length: in the classification used for Egyptian cotton, long staple runs from about 29 to 33 millimetres and extra-long staple is 35 millimetres or more, and longer fibres spin into finer, smoother and more durable yarns. For formal shirts worn under a jacket, those qualities usually matter more than maximum breathability.
Blends: The Practical Middle
A linen-cotton blend keeps much of linen’s breathability and texture while creasing noticeably less. For men who want a cool shirt that still looks presentable after a commute, it is often the most practical choice.
Not All Linen Is the Same
Linen varies more than most people expect. Lighter, finer shirt-weight linens drape softly and are the most comfortable in heat, while heavier linens used for trousers and jackets feel crisper and crease in deeper folds. The yarn and finish matter too: a smooth, finely woven linen looks polished enough for a smart-casual office, while a slubby, loosely woven one looks deliberately relaxed. When choosing, hold the cloth up to the light and crush a corner in your hand; it shows how open the weave is and how it will crease.
Linen and Cotton by City
| City | Weather | Everyday shirt | Formal shirt |
| Chennai | Hot and humid most of the year | Linen or cotton voile | Lightweight poplin |
| Kochi | Humid, heavy monsoon | Linen or linen-cotton blend | Poplin, half-lined jacket over it |
| Hyderabad | Very hot summers, drier heat | Linen or seersucker | Poplin or fine twill |
| Bengaluru | Mild, warm afternoons | Chambray or linen blend | Two-ply poplin or twill |
Colour and Sweat
Light colours such as white, sky blue, sand and pale pink reflect sunlight and stay cooler outdoors. Mid-grey and some bright colours show sweat marks most clearly; white and very dark colours hide them better. A lightweight cotton undershirt under a formal shirt absorbs sweat and protects the outer shirt, though it adds a layer on the hottest days.
Fit for Heat
A shirt that is skin-tight traps heat and shows every damp patch. For hot climates, cut the shirt close enough to look tailored but with a little ease through the chest and back, so air can move. A bespoke shirt can balance this precisely, fitting the collar and shoulders cleanly while leaving room where you need it.
Shirts for Functions in the Heat
- Haldi and mehendi: linen or cotton voile in light, washable colours, since turmeric and henna stain.
- Pre-wedding shoots outdoors: linen photographs with a relaxed texture; a blend keeps creases under control between locations.
- Church or registry weddings: a crisp cotton poplin under a lightweight suit looks sharper than linen.
- Under a bandhgala or Nehru jacket: a fine cotton band-collar shirt keeps the neckline clean.
How Long Each Lasts
Good linen is remarkably durable and softens with every wash, so a well-made linen shirt can last for years. Cotton shirts usually wear first at the collar and cuffs, which is why rotating several shirts extends their life. In both cases, washing at moderate temperatures and avoiding harsh drying makes the biggest difference.
What to Look For in a Linen Shirt
- An even weave: some slub is natural, but large irregular thick spots suggest lower-grade yarn.
- A shirt-weight cloth: it should drape softly rather than feel stiff like a jacket linen.
- Opacity: hold it to the light; fine linen should not be see-through in white.
- Clean seams: linen frays easily, so well-finished seams matter for longevity.
- A relaxed but tailored cut: a little ease in the body keeps air moving without looking baggy.
What to Look For in a Cotton Shirt
- Long-staple fibre: Egyptian, Giza and other long-staple cottons feel smoother and last longer.
- Two-ply yarns: stronger and less prone to creasing than single-ply.
- The right weave for the weather: poplin or voile for heat, twill or oxford for air-conditioned days.
- A well-constructed collar: it should sit evenly and keep its shape after washing.
Should You Wear an Undershirt in the Heat?
Under a formal cotton shirt, a thin, close-fitting cotton undershirt absorbs sweat before it reaches the outer shirt, which protects the shirt from marks and keeps it looking crisp through a long day. The trade-off is an extra layer. Under a linen shirt worn on its own, it usually defeats the purpose, since linen’s appeal is air moving freely against the skin. If you do wear one, choose a colour close to your skin tone rather than white, so it does not show through a light shirt.
Seersucker and Voile Explained
Seersucker is a cotton woven so that some threads are held under different tension, which gives the cloth its characteristic puckered stripes. The puckers keep most of the fabric away from the skin, letting air circulate, and they hide creases, which makes seersucker a natural travel and summer shirt. Voile is a very fine, lightweight plain weave with a soft, slightly sheer handle; it is one of the coolest cottons available, and it suits kurta-shirts and daytime functions, though it can look too casual under a formal suit.
Caring for Linen and Cotton
- Wash in cool or lukewarm water to avoid shrinkage.
- Iron linen while slightly damp; it presses far more easily.
- Avoid over-drying in direct harsh sun, which can yellow white cotton and weaken fibres over time.
- Hang shirts to dry on a hanger to reduce ironing.
The Verdict
| Situation | Choose |
| Formal office with a suit | Cotton poplin or fine twill |
| Smart-casual office | Linen-cotton blend or chambray |
| Outdoor daytime function | Linen or cotton voile |
| Travel | Linen-cotton blend |
| Evening event | Crisp cotton poplin |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is linen cooler than cotton?
Generally, yes. Linen is made from flax, whose stiffer fibres keep the fabric slightly away from the skin, let air move freely and dry quickly after absorbing moisture. Lightweight open cotton weaves such as voile and seersucker come close, while dense cottons like oxford and heavy twill are noticeably warmer.
Why does linen crease so much?
Flax fibres have little natural elasticity, so they hold every fold. Creasing is part of linen’s character and looks relaxed rather than untidy on a well-cut shirt. A linen-cotton blend creases less while keeping much of linen’s coolness.
Which cotton weave is best for hot weather?
Voile and lightweight poplin are the coolest smooth cottons, and seersucker’s puckered surface keeps fabric off the skin. Chambray is a comfortable casual option. Oxford and heavier twills are warmer and better suited to air-conditioned offices.
Can I wear a linen shirt to the office?
Yes, in a smart-casual office, and especially in a fine linen or a linen-cotton blend in white, light blue or sand. For formal meetings with a suit and tie, a crisp cotton poplin or twill still looks sharper.
How much do custom linen or cotton shirts cost at CPS?
Bespoke shirts at Chirag Parmar Signatures range from ₹3,500 to ₹8,500, depending on the fabric, from two-ply Egyptian and Giza cotton to linen.
