The Studio & Atelier
Linen is the right answer for most of the South Indian calendar and the wrong answer for a boardroom, and knowing which is which is most of the skill in commissioning one. At Chirag Parmar Signatures in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, we cut linen shirts for the events they are actually worn to: daytime wedding functions, destination and beach weddings in Goa and Kerala, travel, and the stretch of the year when Chennai and Coimbatore make cotton feel heavy. Linen is woven from flax, which absorbs moisture and dries quickly, and that is why it feels cool in humid heat.
Pure linen breathes best and creases most; a linen-cotton blend gives you most of the airflow with noticeably better crease recovery, which is what you want for a shirt worn through a full day of events. Cut matters more than in cotton: linen has no stretch, so a bespoke pattern with slightly more room through the chest and armhole is what keeps it comfortable without looking oversized.
A camp collar and a straight hem read correctly untucked for resort wear, while a semi-spread collar and a curved tail keep a linen shirt formal enough to tuck. Wash linen in cool water and iron it while slightly damp for the crispest finish.
