That difference should drive every specification decision, and mostly it does not. Start With Two Suits, Not One
Navy and mid-grey, in that order. Between them they cover client meetings, formal reviews, interviews, and evening obligations. The reason for two rather than one is not variety but longevity: wool needs roughly a day to recover its shape after wearing, so rotating two suits makes each last far longer than wearing one continuously would. For a suit worn weekly, half-canvas is the honest recommendation: it delivers most of the benefit of full canvassing at meaningfully lower cost, and it is the difference between a jacket that improves with wear and one that stiffens and bubbles by its third year.
Fabric Weight for Indian Offices
Bengaluru's moderate climate makes 250-280gsm wool the practical year-round choice. Chennai, Coimbatore, and coastal Tamil Nadu are better served by 220gsm summer wools or open-weave cloths, which breathe considerably more. Heavier 300gsm-plus suiting is only worth it if you work in a heavily air-conditioned environment or travel regularly to colder climates. Fabric weight is the specification most often copied from Western tailoring guidance without adjustment, and it is the one that most needs adjusting for India.
The Detail Worth Adding: A Second Pair of Trousers
Trousers wear out well before the jacket does, usually at the seat and inner thigh. Ordering a second pair of trousers in the same cloth at the time of commission is the standard way to extend a suit's usable life, and it costs a fraction of a second suit. A pair typically needs about 1.3-1.5 metres of cloth, so it is worth deciding at the point you buy the fabric rather than later, when that batch may no longer be available.

For office wear specifically, the sensible specification is rarely the most expensive one, and this is where most first-time buyers get talked upward. Half-canvas construction gives you most of the benefit of full canvassing at meaningfully lower cost. A Super 110s to 130s wool will outlast a Super 150s in a suit worn weekly, because the finer fibre creases sooner and shines at the elbows and seat faster. The higher number buys drape and lustre, not durability.
The order of priority for a working wardrobe is fit first, construction second, cloth third.
