Starting With Fit
Every tailor has a view on bespoke versus ready-made, and most are predictably in favour of their own work. So it is worth starting with the principle rather than the sales pitch. Chirag Parmar, founder of Chirag Parmar Signatures, puts it this way:
“For me, it always starts with the fit. A garment can use beautiful fabric and have excellent construction, but if it doesn’t sit properly on the person wearing it, it isn’t right. The fabric, cut and craftsmanship all matter, but they have to come together to make the wearer feel comfortable and confident.”
That standard explains both why bespoke is worth it for many men and why it is not the right answer for everyone.
Three Ways a Garment Can Be Made
| Ready-made | Made-to-measure | Bespoke |
| Pattern | Standard sizes | A standard block adjusted to key measurements | A new pattern drafted for one person |
| Fit | Altered after purchase | Adjusted before cutting | Built through a trial fitting |
| Choice | What is on the rail | Cloth and some details | Cloth, cut and every detail |
| Time | Immediate | A few weeks | Suits one to six weeks; embroidered pieces longer |
| Handles unusual builds | Poorly | Partly | Yes |
Made-to-measure is a genuine middle ground. For a man with fairly standard proportions, it solves most ready-made problems at a lower cost than bespoke. The difference shows with posture, uneven shoulders, athletic builds and long garments such as sherwanis.

Price Versus Cost Per Wear
The price tag is the least useful way to compare garments. A better measure is cost per wear: the price divided by how many times you actually wear it. As a simple illustration, a bespoke suit starting at ₹15,000 worn sixty times over several years costs ₹250 per wear. A cheaper suit that never feels quite right and is worn ten times can cost more per wear, even at a lower price. The garments men reach for most often are the ones that fit and feel comfortable, which is exactly what bespoke is designed to deliver.
How Garments Age
What you cannot see matters over time. Fused construction glues the interlining in place; it looks crisp when new but can bubble or stiffen with wear and cleaning. Half-canvassed and full-canvassed jackets have horsehair canvas stitched through the front, so the chest moulds to the wearer over the years instead of breaking down. The difference is skilled hours rather than materials, and it shows most in a garment you keep.
The Fit Problems Tailors See Most
Men who come in after struggling with ready-made clothing tend to describe the same problems:
- Collars that stand away from the neck, usually a sign that the jacket’s balance does not match their posture.
- Shoulders that are too wide or too narrow, the hardest part of a jacket to alter.
- Sleeves that twist, because arms hang at different angles on different people.
- Trousers that pull at the seat or thigh, especially on athletic builds.
- Sherwanis that look boxy, since a long garment exaggerates every fit error from shoulder to hem.
A size chart cannot capture a forward shoulder, an uneven stance or one arm sitting longer than the other. A pattern drafted from roughly 20 to 25 measurements, including those posture points, can.
What Alterations Can and Cannot Fix
A good alterations tailor can make a ready-made garment look far better, but there are limits built into the cut.
| Usually fixable | Difficult or impossible |
| Sleeve length, if the cuff buttons are not working buttonholes | Shoulder width |
| Waist suppression on the jacket | A collar that stands away because of posture |
| Trouser waist and seat within a few centimetres | Jacket length beyond a small amount |
| Trouser hem and taper | Armholes cut too low or too large |
| Kurta length | The line of a long garment such as a sherwani |
If the shoulders and chest of a ready-made garment fit you well, alterations can finish the job. If they do not, no amount of alteration will make the garment sit correctly. Our guide to measuring yourself for a suit explains which measurements matter most.
What a Bespoke Commission Involves
- Consultation: the occasion, how often the garment will be worn, the venue, the season and your preferences.
- Cloth selection: choosing fabric against where you will wear it, not only how it looks on a swatch.
- Measurements: 20 to 25 measurements, plus notes on posture and shoulder slope.
- Pattern and cutting: a new pattern is drafted and the garment cut from your cloth.
- Trial fitting: the collar, shoulders, balance, length and ease are checked and corrected.
- Finishing: embroidery, buttonholes and final pressing, then collection.
What Bespoke Changes for Indian Garments
Bespoke is often discussed in terms of suits, but it matters even more for Indian menswear. A sherwani or bandhgala has a closed or long front that shows fit clearly, and hand embroidery works best when it is drawn to the wearer’s own cloth and proportions rather than repeated from a catalogue. That combination of pattern and embroidery is where a bespoke wedding garment most visibly differs from a ready-made one. Our guide to closed-neck garments explains why they forgive so little.
Honest Advice a Good Tailor Gives
Chirag’s own philosophy describes what that standard costs in practice: telling a client that the fabric he has set his heart on will crease through a long ceremony, and that a slightly different cloth will serve him better; starting a heavily embroidered sherwani months ahead rather than promising it in weeks. An atelier that never says any of that is easier to buy from, but not easier to wear.
Buying Fewer, Better Garments
A small wardrobe of well-fitting garments, worn in rotation, usually serves better than a larger one of pieces that almost fit. Wool recovers its shape when it rests, canvassed jackets keep their line, and garments you enjoy wearing are the ones you look after. For many men, the most useful approach is a mix: bespoke for the pieces that matter most, such as a wedding outfit or a work suit worn weekly, and good ready-made for casual clothing.
Questions to Ask a Bespoke Tailor
- How many measurements do you take, and do you note posture? A list of the points measured tells you whether the pattern is truly individual.
- Is the jacket fused, half-canvas or full-canvas? The answer affects how the garment wears over years.
- When is the trial fitting, and what can change at it? A fitting before finishing is where bespoke earns its price.
- What exactly is the cloth? Composition, weight and, for wool, the Super number.
- Who does the embroidery, and where? In-house work can be planned around the pattern.
- What is the delivery date, and what is included? Get both in writing.
Common Myths About Bespoke
“Bespoke is only for the very wealthy.”
Bespoke costs more than most ready-made clothing, but not always by as much as people expect. At Chirag Parmar Signatures, bespoke suits start from ₹15,000 and kurta sets from ₹5,500, and cost per wear often narrows the gap further.
“It takes months.”
A bespoke suit typically takes one to six weeks, including a fitting. Heavily embroidered sherwanis sit at the longer end, because the handwork itself takes time.
“You need to know exactly what you want.”
You do not. The consultation exists to work out the right garment, cloth and details from how and where you will wear it. Reference images help, but they are a starting point.
“Bespoke means suits.”
In India, some of the garments that benefit most from bespoke are sherwanis, bandhgalas and kurtas, because their long or closed fronts show fit so clearly.
When Ready-Made Is the Right Call
- You need something today or this week, and it is not your own wedding.
- A standard size already fits your shoulders and chest well.
- It is a trend piece you expect to wear for a season.
- Budget is tight, and good alterations can finish the fit.
A Simple Way to Decide
- How often will you wear it?
- Does a standard size fit your shoulders and chest?
- How important is the occasion, and the photographs?
- How much time do you have?
If you will wear it often, standard sizes do not fit you well, or the occasion is your wedding, bespoke is usually worth it. For a neutral, side-by-side comparison of construction, cost and timelines, read bespoke vs ready-made, and for pricing detail, our cost guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is bespoke tailoring worth the money?
It is worth it when fit, comfort and longevity matter: a wedding wardrobe, a body that falls between sizes, or garments worn often over many years. For a one-off event at short notice with a standard build, a well-altered ready-made garment is often the sensible choice.
What is the difference between made-to-measure and bespoke?
Made-to-measure adjusts an existing standard pattern to your key measurements before cutting. Bespoke drafts a completely new pattern for one person, including posture and shoulder slope, and refines it at a trial fitting.
Can a tailor alter the shoulders of a ready-made suit?
Not meaningfully. Shoulder width, armholes and a collar that stands away because of posture are built into the cut. Sleeve length, waist suppression, trouser waist and hems are usually fixable.
How long does a bespoke suit last?
With rotation and care, many years. Canvassed construction, in which horsehair canvas is stitched through the chest, moulds to the wearer over time, whereas fused interlinings can bubble. Very fine wools wear faster than sturdier ones.
When is ready-made the better choice?
When you need something immediately, when a standard size already fits your shoulders and chest well, for a trend-led piece you expect to wear only briefly, or when budget is tight and good alterations can finish the fit.
What does Chirag Parmar say matters most in a garment?
Fit. In his words: “For me, it always starts with the fit. A garment can use beautiful fabric and have excellent construction, but if it doesn’t sit properly on the person wearing it, it isn’t right.”
