Why the Reception Outfit Is Different
The ceremony outfit follows ritual. The reception outfit follows the evening: artificial light, a stage, a long line of guests, and more photographs than any other part of the wedding. It has to look striking from the back of a hall, hold up to close-up portraits, and still be comfortable after three hours of standing, greeting and bending for elders’ blessings. It should also look clearly different from what you wore that morning.
Seven Reception Looks That Work
1. The classic black tuxedo
A black tuxedo with satin or grosgrain lapels, a white pleated shirt and a black bow tie never looks wrong at a hotel or banquet reception. Keep it simple and let the fit do the work.
2. Midnight blue
A very dark navy tuxedo often reads as richer than black under warm indoor lighting and in photographs, while still being unmistakably formal. It is a quiet way to stand apart without leaving black tie.
3. The ivory dinner jacket
An ivory or off-white jacket with black trousers is the traditional warm-weather evening alternative, and it glows against dark stage backdrops. Gold detailing on the lapel ties it to wedding jewellery; see our matching ivory dinner jackets with gold lapels.
4. The tonal embroidered tuxedo
Embroidery in the same family as the cloth, such as silver on navy, keeps a jacket formal from a distance and rewarding up close. Our navy sequin-embroidered reception tuxedo is a good example.
5. The velvet or brocade bandhgala
A closed-neck bandhgala in velvet or brocade feels regal and suits families who want an Indian silhouette with a tailored line. Velvet is at its best in cool evenings and air-conditioned venues. See Jodhpuri suits.
6. The embroidered sherwani
For a traditional reception, or a wedding that brings North and South Indian customs together, an embroidered sherwani in a different colour from the ceremony outfit keeps continuity while marking the change of mood. See sherwanis in Bangalore.
7. The structured Indo-Western jacket
A long, embroidered jacket over a matching kurta and trousers gives presence without the weight of a sherwani. Our taupe chevron sequin jacket shows how a muted colour can still carry an evening.

Colour Under Stage Lights
Most receptions are photographed under warm artificial light, often with coloured stage lighting and a bright floral backdrop, and that changes how colour reads. Flat black can lose its shape in photographs, while midnight blue keeps its depth. Ivory glows against a dark backdrop but can disappear in front of white flowers. Jewel tones such as bottle green and wine hold their richness under warm light, while very pale pastels can look washed out. Ask the decorator for the stage colours before choosing, and check fabric under warm indoor light as well as daylight.
Coordinating With the Bride’s Reception Outfit
- Beside a gown: a tuxedo or dinner jacket is the natural pairing; match the formality rather than the colour.
- Beside a heavily embroidered lehenga: a quieter jacket, such as a plain tuxedo or a tonal bandhgala, lets her outfit lead.
- Beside a silk saree: a bandhgala or sherwani in a complementary tone keeps the pair within an Indian register.
- Metal tones: match gold or silver detailing on your jacket to her jewellery.
Our groom colour combination guide covers specific pairings.
City Notes
Bengaluru
Bengaluru’s altitude keeps evenings mild, and from roughly November to February they turn genuinely cool. That is the season for velvet bandhgalas, three-piece tuxedos and heavier wool. For receptions in the warmer months, especially outdoors, choose lightweight wool and lighter linings. See our reception outfits.
Mysuru
Mysuru weddings often lean towards tradition, and the city’s royal heritage makes bandhgalas, silk sherwanis and ivory-and-gold palettes feel especially at home. The climate is similar to Bengaluru’s, a little warmer in the day, so the same seasonal fabric advice applies. See our guide for Mysuru grooms.
Coimbatore
Coimbatore evenings can be pleasant, but days are warm and many receptions use open lawns. Lightweight cloths, breathable linings and lighter colours make sense, with velvet kept for air-conditioned halls. See our guide for Coimbatore grooms.
Climate at a Glance
| City | Altitude | Climate | What it means for the reception outfit |
| Bengaluru | Roughly 900 metres | Mild, with cool evenings from about November to February | Velvet and heavier wool in winter; lightweight wool otherwise |
| Mysuru | About 770 metres | Tropical savanna; hottest from March to May, monsoon from June to October | Similar to Bengaluru, a little warmer by day; avoid heavy cloth in summer |
| Coimbatore | About 427 metres | Hot semi-arid, with the main rains from the northeast monsoon in October and November | Lightweight cloth and breathable linings most of the year |
Practical Details for a Long Evening
- Movement: check that you can raise your arms and bend without the jacket pulling across the back.
- Embellishment placement: heavy sequins on sleeves rub and catch during hours of greetings; keep dense work to the chest and lapels.
- Shoes: wear them in before the day. Patent or polished black shoes suit a tuxedo; mojaris suit a sherwani or bandhgala.
- Heat: a breathable lining matters more than the outer cloth once the stage lights are on.
- Contrast with the ceremony: if the muhurtham was ivory and gold, a dark or jewel-toned reception outfit makes the album tell a story.
Accessories for the Reception
- Bow tie or tie: a bow tie with a tuxedo or dinner jacket; a tie only with a suit.
- Studs and cufflinks: black onyx or mother-of-pearl studs suit a pleated evening shirt; keep cufflinks in the same metal as any lapel detailing.
- Pocket square: white linen or silk is always correct; a patterned square adds personality to an ivory jacket.
- Brooch: a single brooch at the collar or chest finishes a bandhgala.
- Footwear: patent or highly polished black shoes with a tuxedo; mojaris or loafers with a sherwani or bandhgala.
- Watch: slim and understated; a large sports watch catches on shirt cuffs.
Changing From Ceremony to Reception
When the ceremony and reception fall on the same day, the change of outfit needs planning. Allow time for a shower, a change of hairstyle and a few photographs before guests arrive. Keep the reception outfit steamed and hanging in a garment bag at the venue, with shoes, studs, cufflinks and the bow tie packed in one pouch. Hand the ceremony outfit to a family member to fold and store, especially if it is silk or embroidered, so it is not left crumpled overnight.
Dressing the Groom’s Family for the Reception
The reception is where family groups are photographed most, so a little coordination goes a long way. Agree a colour family rather than identical outfits: the groom’s brothers might share a jacket colour with different bow ties, while fathers wear a classic navy or charcoal suit or a bandhgala. Keep the groom the most distinctive figure in the group, whether through the lightest colour, the richest cloth or the only embellished lapel. If the family is wearing Indian dress and the groom a tuxedo, bridge the two with a shared accent colour in stoles and pocket squares.
Photography Tips for the Reception
- Button the jacket when standing for portraits, and unbutton a single-breasted jacket when seated on stage.
- Check the collar and cuffs between guest groups; a quick straighten keeps hundreds of photographs consistent.
- Carry a handkerchief for heat under stage lights, rather than wiping your face with a sleeve.
- Avoid overloaded pockets: a phone and wallet spoil the line of a jacket in every photograph.
- Ask the photographer for a few full-length shots early in the evening, while the outfit is at its crispest.
Timeline
A bespoke tuxedo or suit typically takes one to six weeks, and embroidered jackets or sherwanis longer, so plan the reception outfit alongside the ceremony outfit rather than after it. If time is short, Express tailoring offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design. To start, book a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should a groom wear for an Indian wedding reception?
The most popular choices are a tuxedo or dinner jacket, a velvet or brocade bandhgala, an embroidered sherwani, or a structured Indo-Western jacket. The right one depends on the venue, the season, how formal the family expects the evening to be, and how different it needs to look from the ceremony outfit.
What colour should a groom wear for the reception?
Evening receptions suit black, midnight blue, deep jewel tones and ivory. Midnight blue often looks richer than black under artificial light, and ivory stands out against dark stage backdrops. Coordinate depth and tone with the bride rather than matching her colour exactly.
Is a tuxedo or a sherwani better for the reception?
A tuxedo suits a modern banquet or hotel reception and gives a clear change from traditional ceremony attire. A sherwani or bandhgala suits families who want the reception to stay traditional, or weddings that combine North and South Indian customs. Both work; choose the one that fits the evening the family is planning.
How do I stay comfortable during a long reception stage line?
Choose a breathable cloth and a light lining, make sure the jacket lets you raise your arms to greet guests, wear shoes you have already broken in, and avoid heavy sequins on the sleeves, which rub and catch through hours of handshakes and hugs.
