Why Timing Matters More Than Budget
Most wedding wardrobe problems are timing problems. Embroidery that cannot be finished, a fitting squeezed into the week of the wedding, a family outfit that does not match anything else. Hand-embroidered pieces take weeks, fittings need gaps between them, and every other part of the wedding competes for your time. A simple plan, started early, removes almost all of that stress.
The Plan at a Glance
| When | Focus | Key decisions |
| 4+ months | Map the wardrobe | Functions, formality, budget, first consultation |
| 3 months | Design and cloth | Silhouettes, colours, embroidery, measurements |
| 2 months | Production and family | Family outfits, accessories, suits scheduled |
| 1 month | Fittings | Trial fittings with shoes and accessories |
| 2 weeks | Final checks | Collection, labelling, storage |
| Wedding week | Kit | Steamer, pins, spares, outfit list |

Four Months Before or More: Map the Wardrobe
- List every function you need an outfit for: engagement, haldi, mehendi, sangeet, ceremony, reception and any post-wedding events.
- Note the time of day, venue type (indoor, outdoor, air-conditioned) and expected formality of each.
- Decide which outfits must be traditional and which can be tailored or Indo-Western, and check expectations with family.
- Set a rough budget and decide where it should go. The ceremony outfit usually deserves the most.
- Book an initial consultation. Our complete groom wear guide helps you map functions if you are unsure.
Three Months Before: Design and Cloth
- Finalise silhouettes and colours across the whole wedding, so outfits build on each other rather than repeat.
- Choose cloth for each piece with the season and venue in mind: silk and brocade for the ceremony, lighter wool or velvet for the reception depending on the month.
- Confirm embroidery designs, since embroidered sherwanis take one to six weeks.
- Have measurements taken, ideally in the undergarments and shoes you will wear.
- Share the palette with parents and siblings so their outfits can be planned.
Two Months Before: Production and Family
- Embroidery and construction are under way for the most detailed pieces.
- Order outfits for the groom’s family and groomsmen, coordinated with the groom’s palette.
- Plan accessories: safa or peta, mojaris or shoes, stoles, cufflinks, brooches and malas.
- Suits and tuxedos, which take one to six weeks, can be scheduled now to finish around the time embroidered pieces do.
One Month Before: Fittings
- Attend fittings for each outfit. The pattern is refined until each piece sits correctly.
- Wear or bring the shoes and accessories for each look, since they change how trousers and hems should fall.
- Sit, stand, raise your arms and walk in each outfit, especially the ones you will wear through long rituals or a reception line.
- Confirm pick-up or delivery dates, leaving at least a week of buffer before the first function.
Two Weeks Before: Final Checks
- Final trial of every outfit with accessories.
- Check that trousers, kurtas and dhotis are hemmed for the footwear you will actually wear.
- Collect the finished pieces and hang them in breathable covers, not plastic.
- Label each outfit by function so there is no confusion on the day.
The Week of the Wedding: Pack a Wardrobe Kit
- Handheld steamer and a few padded hangers
- Safety pins, a small sewing kit and spare buttons
- Collar stays, cufflinks, studs and a spare bow tie
- Handkerchiefs, blotting paper and deodorant
- Blister plasters for new shoes or mojaris
- A list of which accessories go with which outfit
A Sample Outfit Sheet
A simple sheet, shared with whoever is helping you dress, removes most wedding-day confusion.
The Day Before Each Function
- Steam the outfit and hang it where it will not be crushed.
- Lay out accessories in a labelled pouch.
- Check shoes are clean and polished.
- Try the complete look once, including any safa or peta, so tying it on the day is quick.
Coordinating With the Bride
Share the bride’s outfit colours with your tailor as early as possible, ideally as photographs of the actual fabric in daylight rather than a description. Coordination works best by tone and depth rather than exact matching: an ivory and gold sherwani beside a red and gold lehenga, or a champagne jacket beside a gold outfit. Check each pairing function by function, because a colour that works beautifully in daylight can look quite different under stage lighting at the reception.
Planning for Weight and Fitness Changes
Many grooms train or change their diet before the wedding. That is fine, but tell your tailor at the first consultation. Structured garments can be cut with sensible allowances in the seams, and the final fitting can be scheduled as close to the date as the garment allows. Embroidered pieces are the least forgiving, because embroidery placed across a seam cannot simply be taken in, so aim to reach your target size before the embroidered garment’s trial fitting.
Seasonal Considerations
The busiest wedding months in South India fall in the cooler season, roughly November to February, when ateliers, artisans and venues are all in demand, so start even earlier for a winter wedding. Summer weddings call for lighter silks, linen and high-twist wool, and monsoon weddings for fabrics that recover from damp. Match every fabric decision to the month, not just the function.
Common Planning Mistakes
- Planning outfits one at a time: colours repeat and looks blur together in the album.
- Leaving the family to last: their outfits then compete with the groom’s for atelier time.
- Forgetting footwear: hems are cut for specific shoes, so bring them to fittings.
- No buffer week: small adjustments need time before the first function.
- Choosing heavy fabrics for daytime heat: comfort by the third hour matters more than the first photograph.
If You Are Getting Married From Abroad
Grooms living outside India can start the same plan remotely with a video consultation, couriered swatches and guided measurements, and time fittings to their arrival. Add shipping time and a larger buffer to every stage. See NRI and remote consultations.
If Time Is Short
With a few weeks to go, prioritise the ceremony and reception outfits, choose designs with lighter embroidery, and consider Express tailoring, which offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design.
After the Wedding
Have silk and embroidered garments cleaned by a specialist within a few weeks, before stains set. Store them in breathable cotton covers, away from damp and direct sunlight, and refold silk along different lines every few months. Many pieces can be worn again: a bandhgala or suit at work and other weddings, kurta sets at festivals, and a sherwani at family functions for years.
Who Does What: Delegating the Wardrobe
A groom has enough to think about in the final week, so hand clear responsibilities to people you trust. One person can own the outfit sheet and make sure each look reaches the right venue. Another can hold the wardrobe kit and help with the safa, stole or bow tie. A third can collect the ceremony outfit after you change and store it properly. Share the tailor’s contact details with all of them in case a last-minute adjustment is needed.
If the Date Moves
Wedding dates shift more often than people expect, for astrological, family or venue reasons. Tell your tailor as soon as it happens. An earlier date may mean simplifying embroidery or moving a garment to an Express schedule; a later date may change the season, and with it the right fabric for a velvet or heavy silk outfit. It is also worth scheduling the final fitting relative to the new date, since fit can change over a few extra months.
Travelling to the Venue
For a destination or out-of-town wedding, carry the ceremony and reception outfits in breathable garment bags as cabin luggage rather than checking them in, and pack accessories for each look in separate labelled pouches. Hang everything as soon as you arrive, and find out where a steamer or pressing service is available at the venue before the first function.
Keep a Digital Checklist
A shared note or spreadsheet with every function, outfit, fitting date, collection date and responsible person keeps everyone aligned. Add photographs of each complete look with its accessories after the final fitting, so whoever helps you dress on the day can match everything at a glance.
Planning the Budget
Put the largest share into the outfit that appears in the most photographs, reuse lighter kurta sets across daytime functions, and concentrate embroidery where it will be seen. Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should a groom start his wedding wardrobe?
Three to four months before the wedding is comfortable. It leaves time to design the whole wardrobe together, source cloth, complete hand embroidery, which typically takes one to six weeks for a sherwani, and hold fittings without rushing.
What if I only have two to four weeks before my wedding?
Suits, tuxedos and lightly detailed outfits are still realistic, since a bespoke suit typically takes one to six weeks. For very close dates, Express tailoring at Chirag Parmar Signatures offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design. Heavy hand embroidery is the one thing that cannot be rushed.
How many fittings does a bespoke wedding outfit need?
Typically one or two. The pattern is refined across fittings until the garment sits correctly, and a final check close to the wedding catches any changes, such as weight loss in the last weeks.
When should the groom’s family and groomsmen order their outfits?
Ideally at the same time as the groom, or soon after his palette is decided, so colours coordinate and the atelier can schedule everyone’s fittings. Leaving family outfits to the last month is the most common cause of last-minute stress.
What if my weight changes before the wedding?
Tell your tailor at the first consultation. The final fitting can be scheduled closer to the date so adjustments reflect your size on the day, and structured garments can be cut with appropriate allowances where changes are expected.
