The Modern Jodhpuri: Bandhgalas with Breeches vs Slim Trousers
The Question Every Jodhpuri Raises
The bandhgala jacket gets most of the attention, but what you wear below it changes the entire character of a Jodhpuri suit. Breeches make it regal and historical. Slim trousers make it modern and versatile. Churidar pulls it towards the ceremonial world of the sherwani. Choosing between them is not only a style decision but a question of occasion, build, comfort and footwear.
A Little History
Jodhpur gave its name to both halves of this outfit. The bandhgala grew out of the court dress of Rajputana, and jodhpur riding breeches became famous in England through Sir Pratap Singh of Jodhpur, a celebrated polo player who is widely credited with popularising them around Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Full at the thigh for movement in the saddle and close-fitting below the knee, breeches were practical riding wear long before they were wedding wear, which is why they still carry an air of heritage and horsemanship.

What the Record Says About Jodhpurs
According to the history of jodhpurs, Pratap Singh, a younger son of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, Takht Singh, popularised in England the style of riding trousers worn in Jodhpur, a design he improved and first had tailored in India around 1890. When he visited Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1897 with his polo team, their riding clothes caused a sensation, and British polo players adapted the design into their own riding breeches. The Jodhpuri suit itself developed in the same princely state, where by the nineteenth century court garments had been refined into a waist-length jacket for riding and polo.
What Are the Three Options?
Breeches
Full through the hip and thigh, fitted closely from below the knee to the ankle, often fastened at the lower leg. They create a dramatic, traditional silhouette that looks especially at home with a safa and at palace or heritage venues.
Slim tailored trousers
Matching or contrasting trousers cut with a gentle taper. They give the bandhgala the clean line of a suit and are the most versatile choice for receptions, formal dinners and repeat wear after the wedding.
Churidar
Fitted along the leg and cut long so it gathers at the ankle. It is more ceremonial and sits naturally with longer jackets and traditional footwear.
How Do Breeches and Trousers Compare?
| Breeches | Slim trousers | Churidar |
| Look | Regal, heritage | Modern, clean | Ceremonial |
| Best occasions | Baraat, wedding functions, heritage venues | Receptions, dinners, repeat wear | Wedding rituals, traditional events |
| Comfort | Free at the thigh, snug at the calf | Familiar and easy | Close-fitting |
| Footwear | Mojaris, juttis, ankle boots | Oxfords, loafers, mojaris | Mojaris, juttis |
| Tailoring difficulty | High | Moderate | Moderate |
Which Fabrics Suit Each Option?
- Breeches: firm wool, cotton twill or raw silk with enough body to hold the fullness at the thigh without collapsing; very soft fabrics lose the shape.
- Slim trousers: the same cloth as the bandhgala for a suit, or a contrasting wool or linen for a lighter look.
- Churidar: a fabric with some give, such as a fine cotton or silk, so it gathers neatly at the ankle and moves comfortably.
Fit Notes
For breeches
The transition at the knee is everything. Fullness above should fall naturally rather than balloon, and the leg below should be fitted without restricting movement when you sit or climb onto a horse or into a car. This is one of the most demanding patterns in menswear, and a strong reason to have breeches cut to your measurements rather than bought off the rack.
For slim trousers
Aim for a mid to high rise so the waistband sits under the bandhgala without a gap, a gentle taper, and little or no break so the line stays clean below the jacket. Our trouser fit guide explains rise, break and taper in detail.
The Measurements Breeches Need
Breeches need more measurements than ordinary trousers, because the shape changes so much along the leg. Expect the tailor to take the waist, seat and rise, then the thigh at its fullest, the knee, the calf and the ankle, and the length from waist to knee and from knee to ankle. A good fitting checks the breeches while standing, sitting and bending, since the fullness has to allow movement without ballooning when you stand still.
Choosing for Your Build
- Tall and slim: carries breeches beautifully; the fullness adds presence.
- Shorter: keep jacket and lower garment in the same colour and moderate the thigh fullness, or choose slim trousers for a longer line.
- Athletic thighs: breeches are naturally comfortable; slim trousers need enough room through the thigh.
Footwear in Detail
With breeches, the line from knee to ankle is part of the look, so footwear matters. Embroidered mojaris or juttis keep the outfit traditional and are ideal for wedding functions. Leather ankle boots echo the riding origins and suit a heritage venue or a baraat on horseback. With slim trousers, polished oxfords or loafers bring the bandhgala closer to a suit, while mojaris keep it festive. Whatever you choose, wear it to the fitting so the hem and lower leg are set correctly.
Colour Combinations
- Matching: one colour from collar to ankle for a tall, formal line.
- Ivory or cream breeches with a coloured bandhgala for a classic royal contrast.
- Dark trousers with a textured or embroidered bandhgala for evening.
Accessories
- Safa: the natural partner for breeches at a baraat or wedding function.
- Brooch: a single brooch at the collar or chest adds a ceremonial note.
- Pocket square: suits a bandhgala worn with slim trousers at a reception.
- Waist: side adjusters rather than a belt keep the line clean under a closed bandhgala.
By Function
For the baraat and heritage wedding functions, breeches with a safa are hard to beat. For the reception, slim trousers bring the bandhgala into modern formal territory. For relatives and groomsmen, slim trousers are the practical choice that can be worn again.
Wearing Breeches Again
Breeches are more occasion-specific than slim trousers, but they return well for festive events, heritage-themed functions and other family weddings. Commissioning both breeches and slim trousers with the same bandhgala gives two distinct looks from one jacket: heritage at the wedding, modern at the reception and for years afterwards.
Common Mistakes
- Breeches so full at the thigh that they balloon when standing.
- A lower leg so tight it restricts sitting or walking.
- Contrasting breeches and jacket on a shorter frame, which shortens the leg visually.
- Choosing footwear after the fitting, so the hem is set for the wrong shoe.
Trying Breeches Before Committing
Breeches look very different on the body than on a hanger, and many grooms are unsure until they see them. At the consultation, ask to see photographs of breeches on different builds, and at the trial fitting walk, sit and climb a step before deciding on the final fullness. If you are torn, commissioning slim trousers alongside the breeches gives a safe second option for the reception and a modern look for years afterwards.
Styling Breeches for the Groom’s Family
Breeches can also unify a groom’s party at a baraat or heritage function. Brothers and close friends in bandhgalas with breeches in a shared colour, and coordinated safas, create a strong group image, while the groom stands apart through a richer jacket, a different colour or an embroidered collar. Fathers often prefer slim trousers for comfort through a long day, which still coordinates well if the jacket colours are related.
Breeches in Warm Weather
Because breeches are fuller at the thigh, they can feel cooler than close-fitting churidar in warm weather, but the fitted lower leg can become uncomfortable if the cloth is heavy. For warm-season functions, choose a lighter cotton twill or raw silk, keep the lower leg fitted rather than tight, and pair them with breathable footwear such as leather mojaris rather than boots.
Caring for Breeches and Bandhgalas
Hang a bandhgala on a shaped hanger that supports the shoulders and fasten the top button so the collar keeps its shape. Breeches should be pressed carefully along their natural lines, or better, steamed, so the fullness at the thigh stays soft rather than flattened. Store both in breathable covers, and brush wool and velvet after wearing before putting them away.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are jodhpuri breeches?
Riding-style trousers that are full through the hip and thigh and fitted closely from below the knee to the ankle. They take their name from Jodhpur, and paired with a bandhgala they create a traditional, royal silhouette.
Should I wear breeches or trousers with a Jodhpuri for my wedding?
Breeches give a regal, heritage look that suits the baraat, wedding functions and palace or traditional venues. Slim tailored trousers look modern and versatile, and suit receptions, formal dinners and grooms who want a cleaner line.
What shoes go with jodhpuri breeches?
Mojaris or juttis for a traditional look, or leather ankle boots, which echo the riding origins of breeches. With slim trousers, polished oxfords, loafers or mojaris all work.
Do breeches suit shorter men?
They can, especially when the bandhgala and breeches are in the same colour to create one continuous line, and the fullness at the thigh is kept moderate. Very full breeches with a contrasting jacket can visually shorten the legs.
What is the difference between churidar and breeches?
Churidar is cut long and gathers in folds at the ankle, and it is fitted along most of the leg. Breeches are full at the hip and thigh and smooth and fitted from the knee down, without gathering at the ankle.
