How Does Chennai Weather Change What a Groom Wears?
A Chennai groom has two things to plan around: a wedding sequence rich in ritual, and a climate that is hot and humid for most of the year. Chennai receives much of its rain from the northeast monsoon between roughly October and December, and the months that follow are a little milder, which is one reason the season is so popular for weddings. Even then, a long day in silk under mandap lights is warm. Choosing the right garment for each function, in the right fabric, makes the difference between enjoying the wedding and enduring it.
Customs vary between communities and families, so treat this as a guide to the usual shape of a Tamil wedding and confirm details with the family.
Chennai’s Climate, Season by Season
Chennai has a tropical savanna climate with a dry summer. As Chennai’s climate records show, the city is humid all year, with relative humidity averaging around 69 per cent, and most of its rain arrives with the northeast monsoon.
| Season | Months | Conditions | What it means for the groom |
| Hot season | April to June | Average temperatures of about 35–40 °C | Lightest silks, silk-cotton, half-lined jackets; avoid velvet |
| Northeast monsoon | October to December | Most of the year’s rain, heaviest in November | Fabrics that tolerate damp; indoor venues; covered footwear |
| Coolest period | December and January | Average temperatures of about 19–25 °C | The most comfortable time for heavier silks and wool suits |

Nichayathartham
The formal engagement, sometimes held months before the wedding and sometimes the day before. Families who keep it traditional choose a silk shirt with a veshti; others prefer a silk kurta set or a bandhgala. Colours can be brighter than the wedding day. See Nischayathartham outfits.
Pre-Wedding Rituals
Functions such as the pandhakaal muhurtham and nalangu are family occasions. A cotton-silk kurta or a light silk veshti keeps the groom comfortable through long daytime rituals. Many Chennai weddings now also include a sangeet or mehendi evening, where Indo-Western jackets and draped kurtas fit naturally.
Janavasam
In many Tamil Brahmin weddings, the evening before the ceremony includes the janavasam, the groom’s procession and welcome. Some grooms wear a formal suit or bandhgala for it; others stay in traditional silk, depending on the family.
Kashi Yatra and Oonjal
On the wedding morning, the groom sets off on the symbolic Kashi Yatra with an umbrella and walking stick before being persuaded to return, and the couple are later seated on the oonjal, a decorated swing, while family members perform rituals. The groom wears his ceremony attire for both.
Muhurtham
The sacred ceremony. The groom traditionally wears a silk veshti with a zari border and an angavastram, usually in cream, ivory or gold. In many Tamil Brahmin weddings the veshti is worn in the panchakacham style during the rituals. The groom’s silk is often coordinated in tone with the bride’s Kanjeevaram saree: matching the gold or ivory of the zari rather than copying her colour exactly. See Muhurtham dress for grooms.
Reception
Chennai receptions have fully embraced tailoring. Tuxedos, dinner jackets, suits and bandhgalas are all common, as are embroidered Indo-Western jackets. This is where the groom’s wardrobe can change mood completely from the morning’s silk. See reception outfits and our wedding suit trends for Chennai and Bengaluru.
Coordinating With a Kanjeevaram Saree
The Kanjeevaram saree is often the anchor of a Tamil bride’s wedding look, and the groom’s silks should sit beside it rather than compete. Match the tone of the zari first: a bright yellow-gold zari on the saree calls for the same on the veshti and angavastram, while antique or muted gold looks better with an ivory or cream silk. If the saree has a strong contrast border, such as a deep red or green, echoing that colour in a narrow border on the angavastram ties the pair together. Ask for a photograph of the pallu and border in daylight, or a small swatch if possible, before choosing.
Community Variations in Chennai
Chennai’s weddings reflect many communities. Tamil Brahmin weddings often include the janavasam and the panchakacham style of veshti draping, while other Hindu communities have their own sequences and dress conventions. Chennai also has large Christian and Muslim communities, whose weddings call for different wardrobes entirely: see our guides to Christian wedding suits and Nikah outfits. Whatever the tradition, the reception has become the common ground for tailoring.
Which Fabrics Work Best in Chennai?
- Ceremony: pure silk is traditional and drapes cleanly through long seated rituals. Choose a lighter silk where the family allows.
- Daytime functions: cotton-silk, linen blends and light silks.
- Reception: lightweight or high-twist wool with a breathable lining; raw silk for bandhgalas.
- Velvet: keep it for air-conditioned venues in the coolest months.
Practical Tips for Heat and Humidity
- Plan a change of clothes between long morning rituals and the evening function.
- Choose breathable linings and avoid heavy interlinings in daytime garments.
- Keep a handkerchief and blotting paper for photographs.
- Wear in new mojaris or shoes beforehand; long ceremonies and humid feet do not mix.
Chennai Venues and What They Mean for Clothing
- Kalyana mandapams: the traditional morning venue. Cooling varies, so plan for heat under the mandap and bring a spare angavastram.
- Hotel ballrooms: air-conditioned, making wool suits, tuxedos and even velvet comfortable for a reception.
- Resorts along the East Coast Road: popular for pre-wedding events; linen, cotton-silk and unlined jackets suit the sea breeze and humidity.
- Open lawns: lighter colours and breathable cloth, with velvet kept indoors.
A Comfort Kit for Long Ceremonies
- A spare angavastram and handkerchiefs.
- Safety pins to secure the veshti and upper cloth.
- Blotting paper for photographs under mandap lights.
- A change of clothes between the morning and evening functions.
- Water within reach, and breaks between rituals where the priest allows.

How Much Should a Chennai Groom Budget, and When?
The silk veshti and angavastram are usually bought from a silk house, while the tailored pieces are where bespoke makes the biggest difference. At Chirag Parmar Signatures, silk kurtas and kurta sets start from ₹5,500, bandhgalas and Indo-Western jackets from ₹15,000, and reception suits and tuxedos from ₹15,000. Allow one to six weeks for a suit, tuxedo or embroidered piece depending on the design, plus time for fittings. Starting three to four months before the wedding leaves comfortable room for travel between Chennai and Bengaluru.
The Groom’s Family at a Chennai Wedding
For the muhurtham, the groom’s father and brothers usually wear silk veshtis with silk shirts, often with a narrower zari border than the groom’s so he remains the focus. Some families coordinate the colour of the men’s shirts or angavastrams. At the reception, coordinated suits or bandhgalas in a shared colour family photograph well, as long as the groom’s outfit is clearly the richest in the group.
Planning the Reception Colour Against the Morning
A Chennai wedding day often moves from cream and gold silk in the morning to tailoring in the evening, and the contrast is part of what makes the album work. If the muhurtham look is ivory and gold, choose a reception colour with clear depth, such as midnight blue, bottle green, wine or charcoal. If you prefer a light reception look, an ivory dinner jacket with black trousers still reads as distinct from the morning’s silk.
If the Wedding Falls in the Monsoon
A wedding between October and December can meet heavy northeast monsoon rain. Plan covered arrivals, keep a spare pair of shoes or mojaris dry, and choose fabrics that tolerate humidity without marking, such as silk-cotton and lightweight wool, over delicate silks and velvet. Carry garments in breathable covers rather than plastic, which traps damp.
