Planning a Wedding Wardrobe From Another Country

For a groom living abroad, the wedding wardrobe is a logistics project as much as a style decision. You are working across time zones, choosing fabric you cannot touch, trusting measurements taken without a tailor in the room, and fitting everything around a flight date that cannot move. It is entirely manageable with the right plan, and this guide sets one out.

Work Backwards From Your Flight

The fixed point is not the wedding date but the day you fly to India, or the day the outfits must reach you abroad. Count back from there.

Time Zones in Practice

India Standard Time is five and a half hours ahead of UTC and does not change for daylight saving, so the gap to countries that do change shifts through the year. The atelier is open from 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM IST, Monday to Saturday.

Where you liveDifference from India
United Arab EmiratesIndia is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead
Saudi ArabiaIndia is 2 hours 30 minutes ahead
Singapore and MalaysiaIndia is 2 hours 30 minutes behind
United KingdomIndia is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead in winter, 4 hours 30 minutes in summer
GermanyIndia is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead in winter, 3 hours 30 minutes in summer
Eastern United States and TorontoIndia is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead in winter, 9 hours 30 minutes in summer
SydneyIndia is 4 hours 30 minutes behind in the southern winter, 5 hours 30 minutes behind in the southern summer

From the Gulf and Southeast Asia, a normal working-day call is easy. From North America, late evening or early morning calls line up best with atelier hours.

Making the Video Consultation Work

Choosing Fabric From Afar

Screens distort colour and hide texture. The most reliable approach is to see cloth on camera in natural light, then confirm with physical swatches couriered to your address. Look at swatches in daylight and indoors, and hold them against the bride’s fabric references if you have them.

Taking Measurements Remotely

  1. Have someone help you; self-measuring the back and shoulders is unreliable.
  2. Use a soft tailor’s tape, not a metal measure.
  3. Wear a fitted undershirt and the trousers or undergarments you would wear under the outfit.
  4. Stand naturally and breathe normally; do not pull the tape tight or hold your stomach in.
  5. Take front, side and back photographs as requested, so posture can be seen.
  6. If you have a trusted local tailor, they can take measurements while being guided over video.

Remote Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

Our step-by-step guide to measuring yourself for a suit at home explains each measurement in detail.

Fittings When You Land

Even with careful remote measurements, a trial fitting in Bengaluru is the best safeguard. Schedule it for the first days of your trip, leaving time for adjustments before the functions begin. Tell the atelier your arrival and departure dates when you order so the timeline is built around them.

Shipping and Customs

Travelling With Wedding Clothes

If you collect outfits in India and fly home, or fly to a wedding abroad with them, keep the ceremony and reception garments in your cabin luggage in breathable garment bags. Fold embroidered pieces as little as possible, with tissue between layers, and pack shoes separately so they cannot mark the fabric. Allow for jet lag when planning fittings: being measured or fitted after a long flight, when you are tired and possibly swollen from travel, is best avoided if your schedule allows a day to settle.

Carry or Ship?

If the wedding is in India, collecting the finished outfits after your final fitting is usually simplest: no customs, and you try everything on before the day. Shipping makes sense when the wedding or some functions are abroad, or when you want the garments before you fly. If you do carry them, keep the ceremony outfit in your cabin bag.

Coordinating With Family in India

Parents and siblings in India can be a real help. They can visit the atelier during opening hours to see cloth in person and share their impressions on your next video call, confirm colours against the bride’s outfits, and plan their own outfits in parallel. Agree early who makes final decisions, so choices are not reopened every week, and keep one shared list of every function, outfit and fitting date that both you and your family can see.

Weddings Abroad: Dressing for Two Climates

Many NRI weddings have functions in two countries: a ceremony in India and a reception where the couple lives. That can mean dressing for two climates. A December ceremony in Bengaluru is mild, while a reception the following week in London or Toronto is cold; a wedding in India in the northern winter falls in the Australian summer. Choose cloth that suits both, such as a mid-weight wool for a suit worn in both places, or plan separate pieces for each event.

A Checklist for NRI Grooms

  1. Fix your flight dates before ordering, and share them with the atelier.
  2. Book a video consultation at least three months ahead.
  3. Receive and approve swatches in daylight.
  4. Complete guided measurements with a helper.
  5. Plan every function and accessory together.
  6. Decide whether to ship or collect, and allow for customs if shipping.
  7. Schedule a trial fitting for the first days of your trip.
  8. Carry finished outfits in cabin luggage.

What to Finish Remotely and What to Finish in India

Not every garment needs the same approach. Kurta sets and lightly detailed pieces can often be completed from remote measurements with a final check on arrival. Tailored jackets, bandhgalas and sherwanis benefit most from a trial fitting in person, because the collar, shoulders and length are where remote measurements are least reliable. A practical plan is to start the embroidered and tailored pieces early from remote measurements, then schedule their trial fittings for the first days of your trip, leaving simpler pieces for last.

Budget and Currency

Atelier prices are quoted in Indian rupees. At Chirag Parmar Signatures, kurta sets start from ₹5,500, suits and tuxedos from ₹15,000 and wedding sherwanis from ₹20,000. If outfits are being shipped, add the cost of insured international shipping, and remember that any import duties and taxes are set by customs in your destination country, not by the atelier.

When Plans Change

Flights move and wedding dates shift. Tell the atelier as soon as your travel dates change, so fittings and collection can be rescheduled. If a new date is closer than planned, Express tailoring offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design, which can rescue simpler garments; heavily embroidered pieces are better simplified than rushed.

Countries the Atelier Serves

Chirag Parmar Signatures works with clients in India, Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai. City guides for grooms abroad include Dubai, London, Toronto, New Jersey, Singapore and Sydney.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should an NRI groom start planning his wedding outfits?

At least three months before the wedding, and earlier for hand-embroidered sherwanis. Remote orders need extra time for couriered swatches, measurements, production and international shipping, plus a buffer before your flight.

Can I take my own measurements for a bespoke outfit?

Yes, with guidance. The tailor walks you, or a local tailor, through the measurements over video. Have someone help you, use a soft tape, wear a fitted undershirt and stand naturally. A trial fitting when you arrive in India catches anything the remote measurements missed.

Will I have to pay customs duty on a shipped wedding outfit?

Import duties and taxes, where applicable, are assessed by customs in your destination country and vary by country and declared value. Confirm when you order how duties will be handled, and allow extra days for customs clearance.

Is it better to ship the outfits or carry them back?

If you are travelling to India for the wedding, collecting the outfits after a final fitting in Bengaluru is often simplest and avoids shipping and customs. Shipping suits weddings held abroad or grooms who want the garments before they fly.

Which countries does Chirag Parmar Signatures ship to?

The atelier serves clients in India, Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai, with insured, tracked shipping.
