What Changes in a Winter Wedding Wardrobe?
Winter is peak wedding season across much of India, and it is the one time of year when heavier, richer fabrics become comfortable rather than punishing. North Indian nights can turn genuinely cold, desert destinations such as Udaipur and Jaipur drop sharply after sunset, and even Bengaluru’s evenings are cool between roughly November and February. That opens the door to velvet, flannel, cashmere blends and layering, and to the deep colours that suit them.
Which Fabrics Are Best for Winter Weddings?
Velvet
Velvet’s pile catches light and makes colour look deep and saturated, which is why it is so striking at evening functions. It is warm and has real presence in photographs. Keep embroidery restrained, because velvet already carries the look.
Wool flannel
Flannel has a soft, brushed surface and a warm handle. It makes excellent winter suits and trousers and looks refined rather than showy.
Cashmere and cashmere blends
Cashmere is exceptionally soft and warm but delicate and expensive. A wool-cashmere blend gives much of the softness with better durability, and is the practical choice for a suit you intend to keep wearing.
Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere and pashmina goats. As the history of cashmere explains, the word is an anglicisation of Kashmir, dating from when the Kashmir shawl reached Europe in the nineteenth century. It is a very fine fibre: under United States law, cashmere must average no more than 19 microns in diameter. It is also hygroscopic, absorbing and releasing moisture from the air, which helps it feel comfortable across a range of temperatures. Today China and Mongolia are the largest producers of raw cashmere.
Brocade with warmer linings
Brocade sherwanis can be made warmer simply by choosing a heavier lining, keeping the ceremonial look without adding bulk.
Tweed
Textured and warm, tweed suits informal winter events such as a daytime lunch or a pre-wedding gathering, but is too casual for most ceremonies.

Where Winter Actually Gets Cold
“Winter” means very different things across Indian wedding destinations. In Udaipur, winter temperatures range from about 5 to 30 °C, so a warm afternoon can become a genuinely cold night. Bengaluru’s evenings are cool rather than cold from roughly November to February. In Chennai, the coolest period of December and January still averages about 19 to 25 °C, according to Chennai’s climate records, which is comfortable for wool suits indoors but rarely calls for velvet outdoors. Plan fabric weight for the specific city and time of day, not simply the month.
Garments That Shine in Winter
- Velvet bandhgala: the definitive winter reception look, in black, wine, emerald or midnight. See Jodhpuri suits.
- Velvet sherwani: regal for an evening wedding or reception. See sherwanis.
- Three-piece suit: the waistcoat adds warmth and formality. See designer suits.
- Velvet dinner jacket: a winter take on black tie.
- Shawl: a pashmina or fine wool shawl draped over a sherwani or kurta, both warm and ceremonial.
How Do You Layer Without Looking Bulky?
- Base layer: a thin thermal top under a kurta or shirt adds warmth invisibly.
- Lining: ask for a warmer lining in sherwanis and bandhgalas intended for outdoor evenings.
- Mid layer: a waistcoat under a suit jacket, or a fitted waistcoat under a bandhgala.
- Outer layer: a draped shawl, or a tailored overcoat for arrivals and departures that comes off indoors.
Tell your tailor about any base layers at the fitting, so the garment is cut with enough room.
Shawls: Pashmina, Wool and Silk
A shawl is the most elegant way to add warmth to Indian wear. Pashmina shawls are fine, light and very warm; wool shawls are sturdier and more affordable; silk-wool blends drape beautifully and add a subtle sheen. For a groom, a shawl in ivory, beige or a tone drawn from the sherwani’s embroidery looks ceremonial. Drape it over one shoulder for photographs and across both shoulders when it is genuinely cold, and choose one with a border or fine embroidery that echoes the outfit rather than a busy pattern.
Which Colours Suit a Winter Wedding?
| Colour | Best in | Pairs with |
| Bottle green | Velvet bandhgala | Gold buttons, ivory trousers |
| Wine and maroon | Velvet sherwani or jacket | Gold embroidery, black trousers |
| Midnight blue | Velvet dinner jacket | Black bow tie, white shirt |
| Charcoal | Flannel suit | White or pale blue shirt |
| Ivory and gold | Brocade sherwani | Gold mala, warm shawl |
For the most dramatic version of the idea, see our guide to black suits and the all-black look.
Overcoats and Outerwear
For arrivals, baraats at night and outdoor receptions in the north, a tailored overcoat or a long bandhgala-style coat over the outfit keeps the groom warm between photographs. Choose a length that covers the jacket or sherwani fully, in navy, charcoal, camel or black, and take it off for portraits. For suits, a classic single-breasted overcoat in wool or a wool-cashmere blend will serve for many winters after the wedding.
Embroidery and Buttons on Velvet
Velvet shows metal thread and beadwork dramatically, but its pile needs careful handling so stitches sit on the surface rather than sinking in. Restrained embroidery at the collar, cuffs and placket usually looks richer on velvet than dense all-over work. Gold, antique brass and jewelled buttons suit deep velvet colours, while covered buttons give a minimal, modern look.
Winter and Photographs
Evening light in winter is warm and low, which flatters velvet and deep colours. Velvet can absorb flash, so texture and a little metallic detail help it show its richness. Plan outdoor portraits before sunset, when it is warmer and the light is kinder.
Winter Wear for Guests and Family
Winter weddings are easier on guests too, but the same principles apply. The groom’s father and brothers look dignified in wool or velvet bandhgalas in deeper versions of the groom’s palette, with shawls for outdoor evenings. Groomsmen can wear coordinated velvet jackets or three-piece suits. For elderly relatives, prioritise warmth and comfort with lined garments and shawls, because they often sit outdoors through long rituals. Share the palette and the expected temperature with everyone well in advance, so nobody arrives in a light linen kurta on a cold night.
Caring for Winter Fabrics
- Hang velvet rather than folding it, and never press it flat; steam from the reverse.
- Brush flannel and wool after wearing to lift dust.
- Store cashmere and wool with natural moth deterrents such as cedar.
- Air garments before storing them after a smoky or humid evening.
Common Winter Mistakes
- Choosing velvet for a daytime function in a warm southern city.
- Forgetting that a lined, heavy sherwani needs room for a base layer.
- Wearing a light linen kurta to an outdoor evening in a desert city.
- A shawl that clashes with, rather than echoes, the outfit.
- Leaving winter orders late, when ateliers are busiest.
Wearing Winter Pieces Again
Winter garments are often the most rewearable. A velvet bandhgala returns for festive dinners and New Year events, a flannel or cashmere-blend suit works through every cool season, and a good shawl lasts for decades. Choosing deep, classic colours makes each piece easier to wear beyond the wedding.
Winter Fabrics Compared
| Fabric | Warmth | Formality | Best garment |
| Velvet | High | Very high, evening | Bandhgalas, sherwanis, dinner jackets |
| Flannel | High | Medium to high | Suits and trousers |
| Wool-cashmere | High | High | Suits, jackets, overcoats |
| Brocade with warm lining | Medium to high | Ceremonial | Wedding sherwanis |
| Tweed | High | Informal | Daytime jackets |
Winter Weddings in South India
In South India, winter is mild rather than cold, but it still changes the wardrobe. Bengaluru and Mysuru evenings from roughly November to February are cool enough for velvet bandhgalas and three-piece suits, especially at outdoor receptions. Hill destinations can be genuinely cold at night, so a shawl or overcoat is worth packing. In Chennai and along the coast, winter brings comfortable temperatures for wool suits indoors, but velvet is usually best kept to air-conditioned venues.
Winter Accessories
- Shawls: pashmina or fine wool, draped over a sherwani or kurta.
- Scarves: a wool or silk scarf with an overcoat for arrivals and departures.
- Footwear: closed leather shoes or lined mojaris for outdoor evenings; velvet slippers for an indoor black-tie event.
- Pocket squares: wool or silk in deeper colours to echo a velvet jacket.
Planning a Winter Wardrobe
Winter weddings book tailors early, so start three to four months ahead, especially for embroidered velvet. For current reception directions, read our wedding suit trends, or book a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best fabric for a winter wedding outfit?
Velvet, brocade with a warmer lining, wool flannel and cashmere or cashmere-blend cloths. Velvet is the most dramatic for evening functions; flannel and cashmere blends are the most comfortable for suits.
Can I wear velvet for a daytime winter function?
It can work on a cool day, especially in a muted colour, but velvet is at its best in the evening, where its pile catches artificial light. For daytime, raw silk, brocade or a wool bandhgala often look lighter and more appropriate.
How do I stay warm in a sherwani at an outdoor winter wedding?
Wear a thin thermal base layer, ask for a warmer lining in the sherwani, add a pashmina or wool shawl draped over the shoulder, and consider a waistcoat under a bandhgala for evening functions.
Is a cashmere suit worth it?
Pure cashmere is exceptionally soft and warm but delicate and expensive, and it wears faster than wool. A wool-cashmere blend gives much of the softness with better durability, which makes it the practical choice for a suit you will wear beyond the wedding.
What colours work best for winter weddings?
Deep, rich colours: bottle green, wine, maroon, midnight blue, charcoal and black, as well as ivory with gold for the ceremony. Velvet makes these colours look especially saturated.
