What Changes at a Destination Wedding
A destination wedding compresses several functions into two or three days, usually in a climate different from home, often outdoors, and always far from your tailor. That changes the wardrobe in four ways: fabrics must suit the local weather, outfits must travel well, every piece must be finished and fitted before you leave, and each function needs a clearly different look because they happen back to back.
What Is the Climate at Each Destination?
| Destination | Climate | Hot or wet months | Most comfortable months |
| Goa | Tropical monsoon; humid near the sea | May is usually hottest; the southwest monsoon from June to September brings over 90 per cent of the year’s rain | The post-monsoon months, October to January |
| Udaipur | Hot semi-arid | Summer from mid-March to June, with temperatures up to about 44 °C; rains arrive in July | Winter, when temperatures range from about 5 to 30 °C |
| Bali | Tropical, around 30 °C with humidity of about 85 per cent | The west monsoon, roughly October to April, heaviest December to March | The drier middle of the year |
Figures are drawn from climate summaries for Goa, Udaipur and Bali; always check the forecast for your dates as well.

Goa: Beach and Resort Weddings
Season: most Goa weddings happen between November and February, when the weather is dry and pleasant. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings heavy rain that makes beach functions impractical.
What works:
- Daytime rituals: linen or cotton-silk kurta sets in ivory, sand, mint or sky blue.
- Pool party or sundowner: relaxed resort tailoring and prints; the atelier’s pastel floral suits in pink and mint show the mood. See carnival and pool party outfits.
- Evening reception: a lightweight tuxedo, an ivory dinner jacket, or a raw silk bandhgala.
Watch out for: sand and sea breeze. Avoid long hems, churidars that gather sand and stoles that fly. Loafers or mojaris without heavy embellishment suit sandy paths. See our guide for Goa weddings.
Udaipur: Palace and Lakeside Weddings
Season: the wedding season runs roughly October to March. Days are pleasant, and evenings from December to February can be cold. April to June is very hot.
What works:
- Wedding ceremony: an embroidered sherwani with a safa and kalgi suits the setting perfectly. See sherwanis.
- Evening functions: velvet bandhgalas and sherwanis for winter nights; brocade for grandeur. See Jodhpuri suits.
- Daytime events: raw silk kurta sets and Nehru jackets.
Watch out for: the temperature drop after sunset in winter. A shawl, a lined sherwani or a waistcoat under a bandhgala keeps the groom comfortable through a late evening.
Bali: Tropical Resort Weddings
Season: Bali’s west monsoon runs from roughly October to April, with the heaviest rain between December and March, so the drier months fall in the middle of the year. It is warm and humid year-round.
What works:
- Ceremonies: lightweight silk or cotton-silk kurtas, or a light Indo-Western jacket with a breathable lining.
- Cliffside or garden receptions: linen suits, ivory dinner jackets or pastel tailoring.
- Welcome events: linen shirts and relaxed trousers. See custom linen shirts.
Watch out for: humidity. Skip velvet and heavy brocade entirely, and pack an extra shirt for each function.
Fabrics and Colours by Venue
| Venue | Fabrics | Colours | Avoid |
| Beach (Goa, dry season) | Linen, cotton-silk, light wool | Ivory, sand, pastels | Velvet, long hems |
| Palace (Udaipur, winter) | Brocade, velvet, raw silk | Ivory and gold, jewel tones | Very light fabrics at night |
| Tropical resort (Bali) | Linen, light silk, cotton-silk | Whites, pastels, soft greens | Velvet, heavy linings |
Other Popular Destinations
- Jaipur and Jodhpur: like Udaipur, desert cities with warm days and cool winter nights, well suited to bandhgalas, velvet and safas in the evening.
- Kerala backwaters and beaches: humid for most of the year, calling for linen, cotton-silk and half-lined jackets; see our Kerala groom dress guide.
- Hill stations: cool evenings even outside winter, so pack a layer such as a waistcoat, a Nehru jacket or a shawl.
- International resorts: plan for the local season and the travel, and carry every outfit finished and fitted.
A Sample Three-Day Wardrobe
- Day one, welcome evening: linen shirt and trousers, or a light bandi over a kurta.
- Day one, mehendi or sangeet: embroidered jacket over a kurta.
- Day two, haldi: washable cotton kurta.
- Day two, wedding ceremony: sherwani or traditional silk with accessories.
- Day three, reception: tuxedo, dinner jacket or bandhgala.
Dressing the Wedding Party at a Destination
At a destination wedding, the groom’s family and friends often travel with their outfits too, so coordinate early. Share the palette, the functions and the expected weather, and ask everyone to bring their outfits finished rather than planning alterations on arrival. Coordinated kurta sets for the haldi and matching pocket squares or stoles for the reception are easy to pack and photograph well together.
Footwear for Sand, Stone and Grass
- Sand: leather sandals, espadrilles or unlined loafers; mojaris with heavy embellishment catch sand.
- Palace stone and marble: leather soles can be slippery, so choose shoes with some grip or add rubber sole protectors.
- Lawns: avoid thin heels and suede, which sink and mark on damp grass.
- Ceremonies: shoes that slip off easily, since footwear is often removed at the mandap.
How Should You Pack Wedding Outfits?
- Carry the ceremony and reception outfits in cabin luggage, in breathable garment bags.
- Fold embroidered pieces as little as possible, with tissue between layers.
- Pack shoes in separate bags so they do not mark garments.
- Confirm the venue has a steamer, or bring a compact travel steamer.
- Label bags by function and day.
- Pack a small kit: safety pins, spare buttons, collar stays, blotting paper and blister plasters.
Heat and Humidity on the Day
Coastal and tropical venues are hot even when the forecast is kind. Schedule outdoor portraits for the early morning or the hour before sunset, keep the jacket off until photographs begin, and ask for half-lined or unlined jackets and breathable linings when commissioning. A handkerchief, blotting paper and a spare shirt for each day make a long outdoor function far more comfortable.
Rain Plans and Backup Outfits
Even in dry seasons, coastal and tropical venues can surprise you with a shower. Ask the planner where each function moves if it rains, because an indoor ballroom calls for a different outfit weight than an open lawn. Pack one backup shirt or kurta per day, keep a compact umbrella with the groom’s bag for outdoor portraits, and avoid suede shoes and untreated silk for outdoor functions in humid, changeable weather. For Bali in particular, a lighter second option for each evening is worth the space in your luggage.
Budgeting for a Destination Wardrobe
A destination wedding often needs more outfits, because functions run back to back and each needs a distinct look. Keep costs manageable by reusing lighter kurta sets across daytime events, choosing one jacket that works over two kurtas, and concentrating embroidery on the ceremony outfit. Remember extra luggage and garment bags in the budget too.
After the Wedding: Getting Outfits Home
Pack the ceremony outfit last and most carefully, ideally the morning after, so it is folded clean and dry. Separate damp or sandy garments from the rest, and have silk and embroidered pieces cleaned by a specialist soon after you return, before salt, sweat or sand can mark them.
A Destination Packing Checklist
- Every outfit, finished and fitted, in labelled garment bags by day and function.
- Shoes for each look, in separate bags.
- Accessories in labelled pouches: safa, stole, mala, studs, cufflinks, bow tie, pocket squares.
- A compact travel steamer and a few padded hangers.
- A repair kit: safety pins, needle and thread, spare buttons and collar stays.
- Comfort items: blotting paper, handkerchiefs, blister plasters and a spare shirt for each day.
Questions to Ask the Venue and Planner
- Where does each function move if it rains or the wind picks up?
- Is there an air-conditioned room close to each venue for changing between functions?
- Is a steamer or pressing service available on site, and at what hours?
- What are the surfaces underfoot: sand, lawn, stone or carpet?
- What time does the sun set on the wedding dates, for planning outdoor portraits?
Timing Photographs Around the Light
At beach and desert destinations, the harshest light and heat arrive together in the middle of the day. Plan outdoor couple portraits for the early morning or the hour before sunset, when the light is softer and the heat more bearable, and keep jackets off until the photographer is ready.
Timing Your Fittings
Hold the final fitting at least two weeks before you travel, with every accessory and pair of shoes. Once you leave for the venue, there is no tailor down the road. If the wedding is close, Express tailoring offers same-day, next-day or 2-day delivery, subject to fabric availability and design. For formal evening pieces, see tuxedos, or book a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should a groom wear for a beach wedding in Goa?
Light, breathable fabrics in pale colours: a linen or cotton-silk kurta set for daytime rituals, a linen suit or light Indo-Western jacket for sunset events, and a lightweight tuxedo or ivory dinner jacket for an evening reception. Avoid long hems and trailing stoles that drag in sand.
What is the best season for a Goa wedding?
Most Goa weddings take place between November and February, when the weather is dry and pleasant. The monsoon brings heavy rain from roughly June to September, which makes outdoor beach functions difficult.
What should a groom wear for a palace wedding in Udaipur?
Regal, structured Indian wear suits Udaipur’s palaces and lakeside venues: embroidered sherwanis, bandhgalas and safas. Between roughly October and March, evenings can be cool, and winter nights chilly, so velvet and warmer layers work for evening functions.
How should I pack a sherwani for a destination wedding?
Carry the ceremony outfit in your cabin luggage in a breathable garment bag rather than checking it in. Fold it as little as possible with tissue between embroidered layers, and confirm the venue has a steamer or bring a compact one.
When should the final fitting happen for a destination wedding?
At least two weeks before you travel, so there is time for any final adjustments. Once you leave for the venue, alterations are difficult, so everything should be finished and tried on with accessories before packing.
