Why an "Orphaned" Suit Jacket Looks Wrong
Suit cloth is chosen so the jacket and trousers read as one continuous garment, which usually means a smooth, slightly lustrous worsted. Isolate that jacket over odd trousers and the sheen has nothing to relate to, so it reads as the top half of something missing. There is also a practical problem: split a suit regularly and the jacket and trousers wear and fade at different rates, so the suit stops matching itself. A smooth mid-grey suit jacket is the hardest to get away with; a navy suit jacket in a textured weave is the most forgiving, which is precisely why navy hopsack works so well as a dedicated blazer.
The One Jacket to Commission First

Specify patch pockets and a soft shoulder so the garment reads unambiguously as a blazer rather than as suiting.

If you wear formal clothing to work, the priority inverts.
