Short answer: an ivory sherwani is the safest classic choice for a groom. It flatters most skin tones, photographs better than stark white, and pairs with almost any safa or bridal colour. Choose raw silk or jacquard for a day ceremony, brocade or velvet for an evening one, and decide early whether the embroidery is antique gold, tone-on-tone, or pastel, because that one decision sets the whole look. Bespoke ivory sherwanis at our Bengaluru atelier run ₹20,000 – ₹1,20,000+.
Ivory, Cream, Off-White or White?
The names get used loosely, but the shades behave very differently in photographs:
| Shade | Undertone | Best for |
| Optical white | Cool, bright | Rarely ideal; can glare under flash and wash out the face |
| Off-white | Neutral to faintly grey | Fair skin, minimalist looks, silver or tone-on-tone work |
| Ivory | Soft warm yellow | Almost every skin tone; gold embroidery; day and evening |
| Cream | Warm, slightly beige | Medium and deeper skin tones; heavier gold work; evening light |
If you are unsure, hold the cloth against your face in daylight. The shade that makes your skin look warm rather than grey is the right one. For pairing with the bride, see our bride and groom colour combination guide.
Choosing the Fabric
- Raw silk: a light slub texture, breathable, and the most natural choice for a daytime ceremony in Bengaluru’s climate.
- Jacquard: the pattern is woven into the cloth, so it looks rich even with little embroidery.
- Brocade: heavier, with metallic weave; best for evening ceremonies and cooler months.
- Velvet: deep and luxurious in ivory, but warm to wear; keep it for winter evening functions.

Embroidery: Gold, Tone-on-Tone or Pastel
The embroidery sets the mood of an ivory sherwani more than the cut does:
- Antique gold Zardozi: the classic royal look. Antique (slightly muted) gold reads richer in photographs than bright yellow gold.
- Tone-on-tone Aari or Chikan: ivory thread on ivory cloth. Understated and modern, and lighter to wear, which suits a summer or daytime wedding.
- Pastel resham: thread colours picked from the bride’s outfit, such as blush or mint, for coordinated photographs.
At Chirag Parmar Signatures the embroidery is drawn and worked in-house, so a motif can be scaled to your frame rather than picked from a catalogue. See how it is done in the craft behind our hand-embroidered sherwanis.
Safa, Mala, Stole and Footwear
- Safa: maroon, rani pink or antique gold for contrast; a pastel to match the bride for a softer look.
- Mala: pearl layers suit ivory particularly well; a single heavier layer is cleaner than many thin ones.
- Stole (dupatta): a contrasting colour adds depth; an ivory stole keeps the look monochrome.
- Mojaris: gold or ivory with matching embroidery; avoid bright white, which looks unfinished next to ivory.
Keeping Ivory Clean on the Day
Ivory forgives more than white, but haldi, kumkum and food still show. Keep the sherwani for the main ceremony only, wear something else for the haldi, carry a stain pen for small marks, and have it dry-cleaned by someone used to embroidered silk. Store it in a breathable cotton cover, never plastic, so the cloth does not yellow.
Price and Timeline
Bespoke sherwanis at our Basavanagudi atelier run ₹20,000 – ₹1,20,000+, depending on the cloth and how much hand embroidery the design carries. A standard commission takes one to six weeks including fittings; heavy Zardozi needs the longer end. If your date is close, ask about Express tailoring, subject to fabric availability and design. The full breakdown is in our bespoke suit and sherwani cost guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an ivory, cream and off-white sherwani?
Off-white is the closest to pure white with a faint grey or warm cast. Ivory has a soft yellow warmth, like old paper. Cream is warmer and deeper again, leaning towards beige. Ivory is the most forgiving of the three: it flatters most skin tones and photographs well under both daylight and flash.
How much does an ivory sherwani cost in Bangalore?
At Chirag Parmar Signatures in Basavanagudi, bespoke sherwanis run ₹20,000 – ₹1,20,000+. An ivory raw-silk sherwani with restrained detailing sits at the lower end; dense hand Zardozi on brocade or velvet sits at the upper end.
What colour safa goes with an ivory sherwani?
Ivory works with almost any safa. Classic choices are a deep maroon, a rani pink, or an antique gold to echo the embroidery. For a softer look, choose a pastel that picks up the bride’s outfit, such as blush, mint or powder blue.
Does an ivory sherwani suit dark skin tones?
Yes. Ivory’s warmth sits more naturally against medium and deeper skin tones than stark optical white, which can look harsh in photographs. Antique gold embroidery adds warmth near the face.
